Sensitive areas for each species of fishes were determined by the following
methods; as adopted by UCRSCC (1984):
1. Colorado squawfish
a.) Spanning areas
Confirmed and suspected spawning areas were identified from an
inspection of substrate records, radiotelemetry, collections of
ripe adults and larvae. The following criteria were used to
confirm spawning areas:
1. Occurrence of deep pools interspersed with cobble/riffle
habitat; and
2. Collection of ripe female Colorado squawfiah (strippable
eggs) and observation of two or more radio-tagged adult
Colorado squawfish within a 8 km reach during the
suspected spawning season; and
3. Presence of larval Colorado squawfish < 15 mm TL collected
within 32 km downstream of a reach.
b.) Suspected Spewing Areas
A different set of less restrictive criteria were used to identify
suspected spawning erase:
1. Collection of ripe male Colorado squawfish (strippable
milt} or one or more radio-tagged Colorado squawfiah in
the areas during suspected spawning period; and
2. Occurrence of larval Colorado squawfish < 25 mm TL
downstream; and
3. Occurrence of deep pools interspersed with cobble/riffle
habitat.
c.) Larval drift areas
Distribution areas of high concern are those in which larvae < 15 mm
TL are reported from seine sample a.
d.) YOY (poet larval) nnraerq area
21
