zebra mussel threats to the West, the
media could be effectively utilized by
having specialists involved to encour-
agedevelopment of television produc-
tions, newspaper releases, radio spots,
magazine articles, and production of
brochures for chambers of commerce,
schools, parks, refuges, and hatcheries.
Television, videos, and radio news
releases may be produced at no charge
if done through the public broadcast
stations (PBS) as public service
announcements. It will be important
to develop sponsors and present
information on television programs
which deal with hunting, fishing, and
nature such as National Geographic
Explorer, Fishing the West, and
Nature.
An effective I & E program also
would include convincing editors and
free-lance writers that they can perform
a service to the public by educating
them about zebra mussels and their
threats. Specific articles should be
prepared to target different audiences.
This could include publications with
national distribution such as National
Geographic and Life, other periodicals
with a more limited distribution
geographically, or ones that target
special interest groups such as State
game & fish magazines, scientific
journals, and newspapers.
It will require a great deal of work
to prepare news releases, furnish
articles to the publishers and broadcast-
ing stations, and to contact editors of
outdoor newspaper columns, Existing
brochures could be utilized where
applicable, but new ones, that discuss
preventing the spread of the mussel
rather than its control, should be
developed. It will be necessary to be
innovative in the distribution of the
brochures in order to get thorough and
effective coverage.
