<br />The- contract has been awarded for a bridge spanning the
<br />Colorado River 1,000 feet downstream from the dam site. This

<br />type in the world. Its single arch will be 1,028 feet in length, second
<br />`~"~ only to the Bayonne Bridge between- Staten Island, 1VTew York axid
<br />}:~ ,; " New Jersey: More. than, 3500 tons of~ structural steel, 250 tons of
<br />reinforcing steel,- and 2,650 cubic yawls- of-concrete will be utilized
<br />in its construction. -
<br />diversion tunnel through the right abutment of the dam site
<br />is under construction. The contract for this tunnel was awarded it
<br />October, 1956.
<br />~' Specifications for the dam and power plant will be eompieted
<br />-early in-1957. The prime contract for the construction of these two
<br />features is expected to be awarded in the spring of 1957.
<br />~2. Flaming Gorge Unit ~ s ,"`<
<br />The Flaming Gorge Dam- and Reservoir will be located on the
<br />_- 'Green River in northeastern Utah, 40 miles north of Vernal, Utah,
<br />and ~2 miles downstream from the Utah-`Wyoming state- line. The
<br />- dam will be a concrete thin-arch structure rising 440 feet above
<br />the ricer. The reservoir will have a capacity of 3,920,000 acre-feet
<br />_ ,` and will extend upstream 94 miles, nearly to the- town of Green
<br />..River, «'yoming. The power plant will have an installed generating
<br />capacity of 8,000 kilowatts.
<br />Construet.ion Aetivities
<br />Construction activities: at Flaming Gorge are being conducted
<br />from temp©rax;y headquarters at .Vernal, Utah. Diamond drilling-,
<br />T'~ to determine foundation conditions for final design; i, well ad-
<br />~:~ wanced. Contracts have been awarded for the construction of 0.3
<br />of a-mile of new roadway-, rehabilitation of :even miles of e.Yistin~• :\
<br />road, and the construction of a timber bridge; 345 feet in length,
<br />_, ,across the Green River. The Bureau of Reclamation plans to let
<br />- a contract for the remaining ten miles of the road early in the
<br />- _ spring of -1957. after the completion of this stretch, the dam site
<br />will be connected. by an oiled highway with a railhead at Green
<br />1• River, ~Wioming. ~ Government to~t-n tiviil be located on Dutch
<br />John Flat about three miles north. of the dam.:~pproach roads from
<br />: Vernal, L'tah, are being improved by the State of Utah-and the U. S.
