Trotlines were tried briefly in an effort to add to the catch of channel catfish. Two trotlines were <br />placed on the bottom in various locations around the reservoir, including the inlet azea. Hooks were <br />baited with shrimp. Trotline sets were for 24 hours. <br />All channel catfish captured in the reservoir were weighed in grams on a platform spring scale, <br />measured to TL in millimeters, marked, and returned to the reservoir. Channel catfish (both stocked <br />and wild) shorter than 250 mm TL were mazked with a pectoral spine clip when recaptured. The <br />other pectoral spine and lastly the dorsal spine were to be removed on successive recaptures. Spinal <br />clips do not adversely effect channel catfish growth or survival (Stevenson and Day 1987). Channel <br />catfish longer than 250 mm TL received an individually numbered Floy tag when recaptured. <br />All other fish species were counted, measured for TL, and mazked with a caudal fin punch hole. <br />1994 <br />The reservoir sampling plan was modified in 1994 to concentrate effort using the most productive <br />gear types in the most productive sampling azeas from 1993. Sample site selection based on habitat <br />type was discontinued and effort was concentrated in the upper half of the reservoir. All sampling <br />was done with gill nets, trammel nets, and baited hoop nets. Electrofishing and trotlines were not <br />used. Trammel nets were judiciously used to avoid shallow azeas where large numbers of carp could <br />become entangled. Sampling occurred June 21-24 and July 12-15. Gill nets and trammel nets were <br />set overnight for 12 hours and during the day for 4 hours. Hoop nets were set for 24 hours. Channel <br />catfish were weighed in grams on an Accu-Weigh digital scale. Otherwise, data were collected from <br />channel catfish and marks placed as described for 1993. All other fish species were handled as in <br />1993. <br />1995. 1996. and 1997 <br />Reservoir sampling was conducted using only gill and trammel nets placed in the upper half of the <br />reservoir. Most sample sites were chosen because they produced channel catfish in the past. Again, <br />trammel nets were not placed in shallow areas frequented by carp. Sampling took place July 18-20, <br />1995, July 22-24, 1996, and July 14-15, 1997. Gill nets and trammel nets were set overnight for 12 <br />hours each in 1995-96 and for 15 hours in 1997. All channel catfish were weighed on the digital <br />scale, measured for TL, and mazked with an individually numbered Floy tag prior to release. All <br />other fish species were counted and measured to TL. <br />A pectoral spine was removed from each channel catfish sampled in 1997 for use in backcalculating <br />lengths at age. Spines were collected by clipping the spine with a wire cutter as close to the body <br />as possible. In the laboratory each spine was mounted in epoxy, allowed to dry 24 hours, and <br />sectioned with a diamond saw. Annuli were read by setting the spine section and surrounding epoxy <br />on the scale reader at 12x magnification. Backcalculations were made using DisBCal and zero for <br />the Y intercept. <br />6 <br />
