1993 Kenney Res. Channel Catfish Study Report ,"~
Page 9
much greater in July than in August because the electrof fishing boat
could be used to move the nets. Areas fished in August were some
of the same areas that had been fished in July.
One wild catfish was recaptured during river sampling. This fish
was originally captured during July in a baited hoop net in the
lower reach, and was recaptured the following day ~in another baited
hoop net placed about 1/4 mile downstream from the original capture
site. The first hoop net was still in place and fishing when the
catfish was recaptured downstream.
On the last day of field work, September 3, 16 catfish were taken
from a baited hoop net in the lower reach and were transplanted to
the upper end of Kenney Reservoir. These fish ranged• in length
between 311-551 mm TL and were marked with individually numbered
Floy tags. The purpose of this transplant was to increase the
number of individually marked reservoir catfish for growth
evaluation in the future. These fish are identified in Appendix A.
Ten Colorado squawfish were collected while sampling for channel
catfish in the White River below Kenney Reservoir. Eight of the
squawfish were taken while electrofishing. These fish were
measured to total length, weighed, and implanted with PIT tags.
Information on these fish is provided in Appendix C. The other two
squawfish were taken from hoop nets. Unfortunately the PIT tag
reader was not available at the time the nets were pulled so these
fish could not be checked for PIT tags or be implanted with PIT
tags. Neither had Carlin tags. Information on these fish is also
in Appendix C. '
VI. Discussion
Three thousand (3,000) marked channel catfish were stocked into
Kenney Reservoir in 19.92 at a stocking rate of 5 fish/acre. The
following year 93 of these fish were recaptured, for a recapture
rate of 3% or 0.15 fish/acre. The 93 fish were given a pectoral
spine clip in addition to the adipose firi clip and released. Three
of those 93 fish were recaptured again. The other pectoral spine
was clipped from these fish and they were released. Another 10
channel catfish were collected from the reservoir that were
unmarked fish, indicating that perhaps 10~ of the reservoir channel
catfish population are not from the 1992 plant, or are_ of wild
origin. No stocked (adipose fin clipped) catfish were found in the
White River below Kenney Reservoir..
The low capture/recapture (93/3) numbers for reservoir catfish in
1993, along with the low recapture numbers for other reservoir fish
species (Table 2), suggest a low sampling efficiency for all fish
populations. If the sampling efficiency is low then the actual
