1993 Kenney Res. Channel Catfish Study Report ~~
Page 8
adjacent to the set. Gill and trammel nets were placed next to
shoreline and set out into the reservoir perpendicular to the
shoreline. Hoop nets were placed parallel to the direction of
flow. The channel catfish catch (n) by substrate type was:
bedrock (30), riprap (0), dirt + rock > 1' (33), dirt + rock < 1'
(20), and dirt/mud (10). Shoreline gradient was arbitrarily
described as steep or shallow. The catch (n) by shoreline gradient
was: steep (72) and shallow (21).
B. River
The total catch of channel catfish in the White River below Kenney
Reservoir by gear type and by date is shown in Table 3.
Electrofishing could only be done during July because Lower flows
in August prevented navigating the river in the electrofishing
boat.
Table 3. The catfish
catch per effort for the upper reach was 2.7 f ish/mile or 8.2
fish/hour. The catfish catch. per effort for the lower reach was
1.9 fish/mile or 4.8 fish/hour. A t-test indicates no significant
difference (90~ confidence limits) between catch rates from the
upper reach and lower reach.
The hoop net catch per effort was less than 0.01 fish/hour for both
July and August in the upper reach. The hoop net catch per effort
for the lower reach was 0.15 fish/hour in July and 0.38 fish/hour
in August. In August, shrimp and carp chunks were used for bait
instead of mackerel flavored cat food and carp chunks which were
used in July. The overall area of river fished with hoop nets was
