Channel Catfish Study Report ;' <br />Page 10 <br />population numbers for each species, including channel catfish, <br />would have to be considerably higher than the catch (Table 2). <br />This reasoning suggests that the actual population of stocked <br />channel catfish would be considerably higher than 93. It also <br />suggests that the survival rate of the stocked channel catfish <br />after the first year in Kenney Reservoir is probably acceptable <br />enough to justify using hatchery fish to provide a sportfishery. <br />The low recapture of 3 channel catfish will cause population <br />estimates to be unreliable. However, using the data (93/.3) with a <br />multiple recapture estimator~(Schnabel) the estimate is 1,207 fish. <br />This would be 40% survival of the original 3,000 fish. A different <br />comparison can be made assuming the capture/recapture efficiency <br />rate 0.032 (3/93) is the same ratio at. which the 93•fish were <br />captured out of the total population. Using the number of fish <br />captured (93) and expanding it by the capture efficiency rate <br />(0.032), the population is estimated at 2,906 fish (93/0.032). <br />This is 97% survival. In other studies, O'Shea and Hubert (1991) <br />used a 75% survival rate to compute catfish numbers in Wyoming <br />reservoirs, and Elrod (1974) calculated annual catfish survival <br />rates at 50%-70% for different age classes over a number of years <br />at Lake Sharpe, South Dakota. <br />The mean length (TL) and weight of all marked reservoir catfish <br />collected~in the summer of 1993 at age 2+ were 214 mm and 97 grams. <br />The mean length (TL) and weight of the 3,000 fish planted in 1992 <br />at age 1+ were 195 mm and 61 grams. The range of lengths (TL) in <br />1993 for the stocked fish were 169-317 mm and in 1992 it was 101- <br />305 mm. <br />The mean increase in length of the marked fish from 1992 to 1993 <br />was 19 mm, which is very slow growth. (Holland+Peters 1992) i45mm 55-69mm <br />The mean weight of the age 2+ channel catfish at Kenney Reservoir <br />was 97 grams. In. comparison, the mean weight for age 2+ channel <br />catfish at Grayrocks Reservoir in Wyoming was 163 grams (O'Shea and <br />Hubert 1991), and 44 grams for age 2 channel catfish in western <br />Lake Erie, Ohio (De Roth 1965). The condition of age 2 channel <br />catfish from these three waters is similar. Based on applying mean <br />TL and mean weight to condition factor K = Wx105/L3 (Carlander <br />1969), K values 21re: Kenney = 0.96, Grayrocks = 0.94, and Erie = <br />
