6. Elkhead Creek This drainage is located north of Hayden and includes Elkhead Creek and its tributaries. The confluence of Elkhead Creek with the Yampa River is located just east of Craig. The waters within this drainage include six lakes (458 ac) and 34 streams (180 mi). One small, 2 ac high lake, Quaker Mountain Lake, and Elkhead Reservoir (440 ac) are managed with stocked put-and-take trout to supplement fishing recreation. Elkhead Reservoir is owned by the City of Craig and is managed by CDOW for fis ' This is the rgest reservoir in the basin that has scant otenti for warmwater fishing recreation. Wild trout fisheries are managed for in six streams covering 34 mi. Five streams (39 mi) are targeted for management and restoration activities as Colorado River cutthroat trout habitat. These include Torso (WC #22397), First (WC #20266), Circle (WC #19530), Armstrong (WC #19035), and Elkhead #3 (WC #23165) creeks. Twenty-three (23) streams (108 mi) and two small lakes (Black Mountain Ponds (3 ac) and Hole-in-the-Wall Reservoir (1 ac)) are managed for the conservation of other native aquatic wildlife. Many of the streams and gulches being managed for conservation of other native aquatic wildlife are small or seasonal in nature with regard to flow. All waters within this drainage have been classified as protected habitat with respect to whirling disease (WD) and can be stocked if necessary with WD negative fish only. Boreal toad occurrences have been documented in the California Park area including Elkhead Creek (WC #23165), First Creek (WC #20266), and Torso Creek (WC #22397).
