6. Elkhead Creek <br />This drainage is located north of Hayden and includes <br />Elkhead Creek and its tributaries. The confluence of Elkhead <br />Creek with the Yampa River is located just east of Craig. The <br />waters within this drainage include six lakes (458 ac) and 34 <br />streams (180 mi). One small, 2 ac high lake, Quaker <br />Mountain Lake, and Elkhead Reservoir (440 ac) are managed <br />with stocked put-and-take trout to supplement fishing <br />recreation. Elkhead Reservoir is owned by the City of Craig <br />and is managed by CDOW for fis ' This is the rgest <br />reservoir in the basin that has scant otenti for <br />warmwater fishing recreation. Wild trout fisheries are <br />managed for in six streams covering 34 mi. Five streams (39 <br />mi) are targeted for management and restoration activities as <br />Colorado River cutthroat trout habitat. These include Torso <br />(WC #22397), First (WC #20266), Circle (WC #19530), <br />Armstrong (WC #19035), and Elkhead #3 (WC #23165) <br />creeks. Twenty-three (23) streams (108 mi) and two small <br />lakes (Black Mountain Ponds (3 ac) and Hole-in-the-Wall <br />Reservoir (1 ac)) are managed for the conservation of other <br />native aquatic wildlife. Many of the streams and gulches being <br />managed for conservation of other native aquatic wildlife are <br />small or seasonal in nature with regard to flow. All waters <br />within this drainage have been classified as protected habitat <br />with respect to whirling disease (WD) and can be stocked if <br />necessary with WD negative fish only.
