Middle Yampa River
Recommended management strategies/options:
1) Manage this reach of the Yampa River primarily for the
conservation of native fish populations.
2) Manage this reach of the Yampa River secondarily as
a fishery for brown, rainbow, and Snake River
cutthroat trout with fingerling stocking, and for native
whitefish (Categories 220/321) such that predation by
large trout does not threaten recruitment of native fish
species.
3) Develop black bass/northern pike fishing in off-channel
pond and reservoir habitats consistent with established
protocols described in Non-native Fish Stocking
Procedures; encourage local use of Fishing is Fun
federal grant projects.
4) Develop access/lease agreements with private
landowners whose lakes or reservoirs are suitable under
Non-native Fish Stocking Procedures to expand fishing
opportunities for either coldwater or warmwater fish
species.
5) Reduce northern pike, smallmouth bass, and white
sucker abundance in riverine habitats by trapping and
translocating to waters developed under (3) or (4)
above.
6) Maintain small and ephemeral stream courses for native
aquatic wildlife species and other wildlife associated
with riparian habitat and convert to 321 or 322.
7) Initiate baseline herptile, mollusk and crustacean
inventories as agency resources permit.
DRAFT - January 13, 1998
20
