5. Middle Yampa River
This drainage includes the mainstem Yampa River from
the Elk River confluence to the Williams Fork River
confluence and all tributaries that flow into the Yampa River
within that reach except Trout, Elkhead, and Fortification
creeks. The waters within this drainage include 22 lakes (259
ac) and 34 streams (266 mi). One private lake (Craig City
Ponds), Dry Creek (south of Hayden), and the 52-mile reach
of the Yampa River are managed as put-and-take or put-and
grow fisheries within the Intensive Management categories.
Only one of these waters, Craig City Ponds, is managed for
warmwater fish species. Four small coldwater reservoirs
totaling 45 surface acres (Grassy Creek, Basin, Shaefermeyer
#1 and #2) and 32 stream reaches (204 mi) are managed in
categories 320/321 for the conservation of native aquatic
wildlife. These streams (or gulches) are small or provide
seasonal flow only. Sixteen other lakes or reservoirs (204 ac)
occur on privately-owned land. These and the four small
reservoirs currently categorized as 320 provide the most
feasible potential for expanding fishing recreation in this
drainage for catchable trout, bass, or pike within the
constraints of the Non-native Stocking Procedures. Almost all
waters within this drainage have been classified as protected
habitat with respect to whirling disease (WD) and can be
stocked if necessary with WD negative fish only. Only three
private waters are permitted under policy to receive WD
positive stocked fish.
