-3-
Reports from Standing Committees
Prohibited and Protected Committee - Chairman, Jim St. Amant
1. Phabdophis, a genus of venemous rear fang snakes, is being considered for
inclusion to the recommended prohibited species list. Committee members
will review data and consult with committee advisors and present recommendations
at the next full committee meeting.
2. Tilapia are well established in at least several of the basin states, including
the lower Colorado River. The impact to river sport and native fishes is yet
unknown but there is evidence that tilapia have seriously impacted certain
California coastal waters and the desert, pupfish in the Salton Sea area.
Identification of Tilapia to species is a difficulty which presents a problem
regarding importation and subsequently management. It appears more stringent
importation controls are needed. The Committee will gather and review each
state's tilapia status and provide recommendations to the Technical Committee.
3. The African clawed frog is well established in California and in one location
in Arizona. A status report is being prepared and should be completed this
year.
4. A book is being prepared by the Committee that will cover all of the Council's
recommended prohibited species. The book will be suitable for use in all seven
states. Arizona (Bruce Taubert) is taking photos to be used in the book.
Endemic Species Subcommittee - Chairman, Upper Basin - Wayne Gustaveson
1. Reptile and Amphibian Booklet. Arizona is in possession of the camera-ready
copy. The various states have paid their share of the cost of publication.
The book will be printed as soon as the presses are available and should be
available for distribution at the April Council meeting.
2. Endemic Fishes Booklet. This booklet will be reviewed following the publication
of the Reptile and Amphibian booklet. Needed revisions will be considered at
the next regular meeting.
3. Status of Recovery Teams
Arizona trout have been restocked in one renovated stream (Lee Valley) and
one stream has had instream barriers constructed with plans to renovate and
reintroduce AZ trout in 1983 (Mineral Creek). There are presently 16 naturally
reproducing populations identified. Current plans call for delisting within
5 years after 30 populations have been established.
Gila topminnows have been reintroduced into 41 sites, 32 of which were successful.
Desert pupfish. Thirty potential reintroduction sites have been identified.
These sites will be stocked by fish collected at Santa Clara Slough, Mexico,
in April 1983. Land acquisition is being pursued for the benefit of the pupfish
in San Felipe Creek, Imperial County, California. Salt Creek pupfish habitat
has been infested by tilapia.
Woundfin. Consideration has been given to the woundfin in the proposed con-
struction of Quail Creek Dam in the Virgin River drainage. Instream flow
needs have been built into the planning documents.
