-4-
4. Colorado River Fishes Recovery Team
Team Leader Jim St. Amant reports the three species plans covered by this
Team have been revised and will soon be ready for review. The three species
are the Colorado squawfish, humpback and boneytail chubs. There is still a
problem with providing grow-out ponds to get hatchery-produced fish to suitable
size for reintroduction.
5. The need for more electrophoretic work was identified in consideration of many
of the endemic fishes. This work could answer the question of how many different
species actually exist. If some of these species could be lumped together,
it may not be necessary to manage for each subspecies; or if a true subspecies
were detected, it may be possible to save•it from extinction.
6. Conservation Plan for Upper Basin Endangered Fishes - Don Archer, USFWS
A plan concerning the enhancement of the humpback chub, boneytail chub, and Colorado
squawfish has been developed by the USFWS for the upper basin. This plan will
be available for review and comment by the states by mid-March. After the
comment period the plan will be sent to Washington for approval. This is a
15-year planning document that will be updated at 5-year intervals. The most
innovative part of the plan calls for funding to be provided by assessment
to project developers prior to project approval.
7. Other items
Woundfin reintroductory sites have been identified in the Gila, Salt and
Verde rivers of Arizona.
' Arizona has published a new list of threatened wildlife. It is available upon
request.
Striped Bass Committee - Chairman, Butch Padilla
The Committee states there has been a decline in the number of large trophy sized
striped bass being taken. An investigation is underway to explore the introduction
of a forage fish more suitable than the present main forage species, threadfin shad.
The Committee requests that the P and P Committee assist in developing recommendations.
(The minutes of the 1983 Striped Bass Committee that are enclosed include additional
information on this subject.)
Jim St. Amant, P and P Committee Chairman, discussed the consideration that
at this time it would appear the introduction of another forage species would add
to the problem until a solution to the low nutrient level of the river is resolved.
Also the P and P Committee would be willing to work with the SB Committee; however,
it is the responsibility of a proponent of a new introduction to demonstrate there
will be no negative impacts.
Fish Disease Sub-Committee
During 1982 60 fish cultural facilities were inspected. Of that total, three
stations were not certified; IPNV was isolated from one station, whirling disease
from another, and the owner of one facility would not allow inspection. Clean-up
operations are underway at the stations where pathogens were isolated. A list of,
facilities inspected accompanies this report,.
