NORTHERPI PIKE STUDIES
LARRY NI. FINNELL
ABSTRACT
A study was initiated in 1982 to determine the current status of
northern pike and other game and rough fish in Elevenmile Reservoir.
Factors to be addressed in the study were Life history requirements
of the pike, their effect through predation and/or competition on
co-existing fish populations, together with estimates of fisherman
harvest of all game fish.
During the ensuing field seasons (1982 and 1983), which extended
from mid-April to early October each year, methods and procedures
were tested, evaluated, and refined to adequately net sample the
game and rough fish populations, examine stomach contents without
injury to the fish, and determine spawning success, movement, age,
growth, age-class strength, etc. of the pike population.
Although this paper will deal specifically with methods and
procedures, some preliminary results and conclusions will be pre-
sented.
11
