FORAGE FISH INTRODUCTIONS IN SEMINOE RESERVOIR
JACK McMILLAN
ABSTRACT
Walleye, (Stizostedion vitreum vitreum), became established in
Seminoe Reservoir in the early 1960`s and by the mid-1970's had
depleted the available forage-and began to stunt. The reservoir
was being managed as a trout fishery, but predation on stocked fin-
gerlings reached intolerable levels. An ameliorative management
strategy involving introductions of forage fish was implemented.
Criteria were established for environmental-safety and forage desir-
ability and three species selected: gizzard shad, (Dorosoma
cepedianum), emerald shiners, (Notropis atherionoides), and spot-
tail shiners, (Notropis hudsonius). Gizzard shad were stocked and
provided excellent forage but failed to overwinter, necessitating
annual transplants. Emerald shiners were stocked but failed to
establish a detectable population and spottail shiners have vet to
be tested.

10
