. I

GREEN RIVER

Mineral Bottom Site - 9/26/84

Aerial photos - Flows are similar for both photo sets. 1951

photos Show numerous bars in channel Which are absent or reduced

in size in 1981 photoS. Plotted cross sections show regular
shaped channels (canal-like) with shifting bed elevations
(degrade under high flow conditions) which suggest"ability of
channel to adjust bed and remove large amounts of sediment.

Channel appears to have become an "isolated bars" situation as
opposed to a situation of "numerous complex bar system- notea in
historical photos. Check on river profile for Green River for
relative steepness of this site.

...
Conclusion: Along with Moab site on Colorado the sensitivity
analysis (putting bars into cross sections) should be carried
out and used as an aid in interpretation.

Grays Canyon - 9/26/84

Air photos - 1974 photos Shows bars have become more vegetated.
Very minor difference in bars configuration, principally at the
mouth of Rattlesnake Canyon (Rattlesnake rapid). Plotted cross
sections Show little change in bed elevation with differing
flow. Longitudinal profile for various disCharges is desire-
able.

Conclusion: Channel equilibrium is a correct assumption for
this site.
