-- distinguishing Gila robusta (which may have included
intermedia and possibly elegans based on distribution of
sample sites) from a few other species and does not
distinguish between that species and Ptychocheilus Lucius.
1960. Gaufin, A.R., G.R. Smith, and P. Dotson. Aquatic survey
of Green River and tributaries; pp. 139-175, in: S. Flowers
et al., Ecological studies of the flora and fauna of Flaming
Gorge Reservoir basin, Utah and Wyoming. Univ. Utah Anthro.
Pap. 48. 243 p.
Discusses fishes taken in the preimpoundment survey of the
Green River in the vicinity of Flaming Gorge which included
g cvAha, G. elegans, and G. robusta for which distinguishing
characters are given. Speculated that these forms
represented "three diverging lines of evolution" and pointed
out the need for further study of these problematic forms,
one of the earlier references to this perplexing problem.
1960. Uyeno, T. Osteology and phylogeny of the American
cyprinid fishes allied to the genus Gila. Ph.D. Diss. U.
Mich., Ann Arbor. 174 p.
Provides osteological descriptions of many western cyprinids
including members of Colorado River Gila spp.
1962. La Rivers, I. Fishes and fisheries of Nevada. Nevada
State Game & Fish Comm., Carson City. 782 p.
Gives accounts with characters and taxonomic discussions
about G. cyAha, G. robusta, and elegans and Jordan (as
subspecies of robusta). Discusses the taxonomy of the
"robusta complex" and hypothesizes that the group includes
many "ecotypes" to which various subspecific names have been
ascribed. Speculates that G. iordani is scarcely
distinguishable from "typical" robusta, commenting that it
fits into the robusta complex "between intermedia and
robusta".
1966. Barber, W.E., and W.L. Minckley. Fishes of Aravaipa
Creek, Graham and Pinal counties, Arizona. Southwest. Nat.
11:313-324.
Discussed the problematic nature of Gila specimens found in
this San Pedro R. tributary and concluded that they
represented "intergrades" between G. robusta: robusta X
intermedia. Rinne (1976) later regarded this population as
"Gila robusta grahami, a name which has been applied to
several of these populations showing intermediacy of
characters.
7
