1968. Holden, P.B. Systematic studies of the genus Gila
(Cyprinidae) in the Colorado River basin. M.S. Thesis, Utah
St. Univ., Logan. 74 p.
(Not seen). Presumably forms much of the basis for the work
published by Holden and Stalnaker (1970)(see below), though
- not cited therein.
1968. Minckley, W.L., and N.T. Alger. Fish remains from an
achaeological site along the Verde River Yavapai County,
Arizona. Plateau 40:91-97.
Discusses remains found in a cave near the Verde River
referring them to Gila robusta and discusses osteological
characters to distinguish this species from G. elegans and
G. intermedia.
1969. Rinne, J.N. Cyprinid fishes of the genus Gila from the
lower Colorado River basin. Unpub. M.S. Thesis, Ariz. St.
Univ., Tempe. 77 p.
(Not seen). Presumably forms much of the basis for the
subsequent work on Gila spp. of this region (Rinne,
1976) (below) .
1969. Vanicek, C.D., and R.H. Kramer. Life history of the
Colorado squawfish, Ptychocheilus lucius, and the Colorado
chub, Gila robusta, in the Green River in Dinosaur National
Monument, 1964-1966. Trans. Amer. Fish. Soc. 98:193-208.
Provides an age and growth study of Gila spp. from the Green
River (treating roundtail and bonytail as one species) which
gives comparative insights into the growth regimes of these
two forms. They were morphologically distinct at three
years of age. The marked differences found in body-scale
growth relationships could have taxonomic implications.
1970. Baxter, G.T., and J.R. Simon. Wyoming Fishes (3rd edit.).
Bull. 4, Wy. Game & Fish Dept., Cheyenne. 168 p.
Gives accounts for G. robusta and G. elegans treating the
latter as full species based on the thesis work of Holden
(1968)(above), thus being perhaps one of the first published
accounts of this reelevation. Discusses distinguishing
characters between the various forms of Gila.
1970. Holden, P.B., and C.B. Stalnaker. Systematic studies of
the cyprinid genus Gila, in the upper Colorado River basin.
Copeia 1970:409-420.
8
