Reviews species of Gila and treats robusta, elegans, and
minacae and intermedia (as subspecies of robusta) in the
subgenus Gila. Describes Gila ditaena (from Magdalena
system, Sonora & extreme S AZ) as new (in subgenus
Temeculina) and contrasts with the geographically proximate
intermedia.
1946. Miller, R.R. Gila cypha, a remarkable new species of
cyprinid fish from the Colorado River in Grand Canyon,
Arizona. J. Wash. Acad. Sci. 36:409-415.
Original description of the humpback chub, Gila cvpha (from
Grand Canyon), a canyon-dwelling species which had escaped
the detection of ichthyologists during 100 years of western
exploration. Provides an analysis of characters involving
cvpha and various "subspecies" of robusta, including
intermedia, seminuda, and elegans. Notes that seminuda
seems to represent an intermediate between robusta and
elegans.
1948. Hubbs, C., and R.R. Miller. The zoological evidence:
correlation between fish distribution and hydrographic
history in the desert basins of western United States.
Bull. Univ. Utah 38:17-166.
Provides an analysis of drainage history of disjunct
portions of the Colorado drainage, including the Pluvial
White River, Nevada, from which Gila Jordan was subsequently
described (next reference).
1950. Tanner, V.M. A new species of Gila from Nevada
(Cyprinidae). Great Basin Nat. 10:31-36.
The original description of Gila j_ordani (from the Pluvial
White R. system, NV), a form subsequently treated by most as
a subspecies of robusta.
1952. Beckman, W.C. Guide to the fishes of Colorado. Colo.
Game & Fish Dept. Pub. 110 p.
A very brief treatment of G. elegans (as subspecies of
robusta) and G. robusta with distinguishing characters
given.
1954. Winn, H.E., and R.R. Miller. Native postlarval fishes
in the lower Colorado River basin, with a key to their
identification. Cal. Fish & Game 40:273-285.
An early attempt to provide identifying characters for
larval Colorado River fishes which succeeds only in
6
