136 p.
Gives thorough description of G. robusta but includes
"i elegans as subspecies thereof based on the presence of
"intermediate" forms from the vicinity of Grand Junction,
Colorado, perhaps indicating that problematic specimens have
existed in the region for a long time. This synonymization
was followed by many subsequent workers and has lead to much
confusion in the application of the common name "bonytail"
to both forms. Ellis also synonymized seminuda with
robusta based on the presence of specimens corresponding to
- characters of the former in Colorado rivers.
1915. Snyder, J.O. Notes on a collection of fishes made by Dr.
Edgar A. Mearns from rivers tributary to the Gulf of
California. Proc. U.S. Nat. Mus. 49:573-586.
Notes characters based on specimens from Gila River and also
notes the probable synonymy of G. seminuda with G. robusta.
1921. Snyder, J.O. Notes on some western fluvial fishes
discribed by Charles Girard in 1856. Proc. U.S. Nat. Mus.
59:23-28.
Provides a listing and synonymy of fishes collected on the
Gunnison expedition earlier documented by Girard in 1856.
Synonymizes Ptychocheilus vorax with G. robusta.
1924. Fowler, H.W. Notes on North American cyprinoid fishes.
Proc. Acad. Nat. Sci. Phila. 76 (1924):389-416.
Provides brief characters and synonymies based on types and
other older material (e.g., grahami and affinis with
robusta). Synonymizes niara with intermedia which is still
treated in the European genus Leuciscus.
1943. Hubbs, C. and R.R. Miller. Mass hybridization between two
genera of cyprinid fishes in the Mohave Desert , California.
Pap. Mich. Acad. Sci., Arts, Let. 28 (1942):343-378.
Does not deal with Colorado River Gila spp. but provides an
analysis of how related fishes (in this case formerly
allopatric species) may hybridize as a result of habitat
alteration.
1945. Miller, R.R. A new cyprinid fish from southern Arizona,
and Sonora, Mexico, with the description of a new subgenus
of Gila and a review of related species.
