The following day, August 22, Dan Brauch and Oliver Erickson met us at the CDOW office in
Gunnison. We traveled to Archuleta Creek, in the upper Gunnison River system. We shocked a
section of stream downstream of Lower Dome Lake observing only non-native species,
including Rio Grande chub, longnose sucker, white sucker, brook trout, and brown trout. Time
at this site was about one and a half hours.

We then spent approximately one hour sampling Cochetopa Creek below the confluence with
Archuleta, but only observed non-native trout.

We followed Oliver Erickson back to CDOW office in Montrose, CO, to pick up fish collected
by Sherman Hebein on August 15, from the Gunnison River at Confluence Park in Delta, CO.
These were being stored in an ultracold freezer until we could pick them up, at which time we
transferred them to dry ice.

Trip 4
On August 29, M. McKell, J. Kauwe, and A. Diaz returned to the Colorado River area to
complete collections there. We returned to Plateau Creek on the advice of Brett Ackerman and
stopped at the first crossing on Highway 65 and sampled from just downstream of the bridge to
about 150 meters upstream. The creek was very turbid, with silt/clay substrate in areas of slower
moving water and gravel/rubble in the swifter areas. We spent approximately two hours at this
site and collected 34 SPD, 30 RTC, 34 FMS, and 16 BHS. All fish collected on this trip were
placed in 70% ETOH.

Brett Ackerman also suggested that we sample Rifle Creek at the Highway 6 crossing in the
town of Rifle, CO, which we did on August 30. This is a small stream 2-3 m wide and 15 cm to
2 m deep with a variety of habitat and substrate types, including cobbled riffles and runs and
sandy-bottom pools. In deeper and swifter areas, we used a seine to prevent stunned fish from
being swept downstream with the current due to difficult netting conditions. We sampled a
relatively long section of stream from the confluence with Colorado River upstream about 200
meters which took about two and a half hours. We collected 29 SPD, 29 RTC, 24 FMS, and 22
BHS. We also observed numerous white suckers (this may indicate that some of the native
suckers collected could be hybrids with white sucker), brown trout, whitefish, and non-native
mmnows.

We returned to Divide Creek and were granted access to the stream by the property owner, Leno
Montover, who was also referred to us by B. Ackerman. We shocked for about one and a half
hours, from the confluence with Colorado River to just upstream of the bridge on County Road
311 and collected 24 RTC and 30 small FMS.

TripS
On September 12, D. Shiozawa and A. Diaz sampled in the San Juan River system with Steve
Whiteman, biologist on the Southern Ute Indian Reservation. We collected 33 SPD, 17 FMS,
and 14 BHS from Los Pinos River, one mile south of Ignacio, CO, at the Ute Creek confluence.
All fish collected on this trip were placed on dry ice.

10
