<br />The following day, August 22, Dan Brauch and Oliver Erickson met us at the CDOW office in <br />Gunnison. We traveled to Archuleta Creek, in the upper Gunnison River system. We shocked a <br />section of stream downstream of Lower Dome Lake observing only non-native species, <br />including Rio Grande chub, longnose sucker, white sucker, brook trout, and brown trout. Time <br />at this site was about one and a half hours. <br /> <br />We then spent approximately one hour sampling Cochetopa Creek below the confluence with <br />Archuleta, but only observed non-native trout. <br /> <br />We followed Oliver Erickson back to CDOW office in Montrose, CO, to pick up fish collected <br />by Sherman Hebein on August 15, from the Gunnison River at Confluence Park in Delta, CO. <br />These were being stored in an ultracold freezer until we could pick them up, at which time we <br />transferred them to dry ice. <br /> <br />Trip 4 <br />On August 29, M. McKell, J. Kauwe, and A. Diaz returned to the Colorado River area to <br />complete collections there. We returned to Plateau Creek on the advice of Brett Ackerman and <br />stopped at the first crossing on Highway 65 and sampled from just downstream of the bridge to <br />about 150 meters upstream. The creek was very turbid, with silt/clay substrate in areas of slower <br />moving water and gravel/rubble in the swifter areas. We spent approximately two hours at this <br />site and collected 34 SPD, 30 RTC, 34 FMS, and 16 BHS. All fish collected on this trip were <br />placed in 70% ETOH. <br /> <br />Brett Ackerman also suggested that we sample Rifle Creek at the Highway 6 crossing in the <br />town of Rifle, CO, which we did on August 30. This is a small stream 2-3 m wide and 15 cm to <br />2 m deep with a variety of habitat and substrate types, including cobbled riffles and runs and <br />sandy-bottom pools. In deeper and swifter areas, we used a seine to prevent stunned fish from <br />being swept downstream with the current due to difficult netting conditions. We sampled a <br />relatively long section of stream from the confluence with Colorado River upstream about 200 <br />meters which took about two and a half hours. We collected 29 SPD, 29 RTC, 24 FMS, and 22 <br />BHS. We also observed numerous white suckers (this may indicate that some of the native <br />suckers collected could be hybrids with white sucker), brown trout, whitefish, and non-native <br />mmnows. <br /> <br />We returned to Divide Creek and were granted access to the stream by the property owner, Leno <br />Montover, who was also referred to us by B. Ackerman. We shocked for about one and a half <br />hours, from the confluence with Colorado River to just upstream of the bridge on County Road <br />311 and collected 24 RTC and 30 small FMS. <br /> <br />TripS <br />On September 12, D. Shiozawa and A. Diaz sampled in the San Juan River system with Steve <br />Whiteman, biologist on the Southern Ute Indian Reservation. We collected 33 SPD, 17 FMS, <br />and 14 BHS from Los Pinos River, one mile south of Ignacio, CO, at the Ute Creek confluence. <br />All fish collected on this trip were placed on dry ice. <br /> <br />10 <br />
