tributary of the Yampa River. In about one hour we collected 31 SPD, 34 BHS, and eight white
suckers.

On August 14, we also returned to the Little Snake River to collect more suckers and RTC.
Recent storms had increased the water depth as well as the width of the wetted channel. In
approximately one and a halfhours we collected 28 RTC, eight FMS, and four BHS. The RTC
are likely young of year and all suckers were juvenile.

On August 15, we proceeded to the White River above Kenney Reservoir upstream ofRangely.
CDOW biologist Bill Elmblad advised us that RTC might be collected here as well as below
Kenney Reservoir Dam. We were allowed access to the river through the private property of a
ranch owner. The water was very turbid with riffle/run habitat and small sections of quiet side-
waters. The standing water combined with dense bank vegetation contained large populations of
mosquitoes, which made shocking difficult. Although we did not collect any RTC in
approximately two hours of shocking, we were able to get 30 SPD and 22 juvenile BHS.

Our final sampling site for this trip was below the Kenney Reservoir dam. We collected 25 SPD,
two FMS (one whole fish and one fin clip, both of which could be hybrids), and 13 sculpin. The
dace and sculpin were taken in shallow riffles and the suckers were from a swift run near the
parking area. We also shocked brown trout and catfish in water near the parking area. We
sampled extensively from the parking area up the main arm through which water flows from the
dam outlet. We sampled another side arm of quiet water among large boulders below what
appeared to be a second spillway. The only fish turned up in the areas directly below the dam
among the boulders were bass, sunfish, and non-native minnows (chub or shiner). Sampling
time at this site totaled approximately two hours.

Trip 3
On August 21, 2001, D. Shiozawa and M. McKell met Sherman Hebein and Oliver Erickson in
the town of Bedrock, CO. Using CD OW truck-mounted shocking equipment, we sampled the
Dolores River upstream of the Highway 90 bridge in Bedrock. In about one and a halfhours we
collected 29 SPD, 12 RTC, three FMS, and two BHS. Other fish species observed at this site
included catfish and non-native shiners. All fish collected on this trip were placed on dry ice in
the field.

We followed Sherman Hebine to the San Miguel River and sampled a portion of river about one
mile upstream of the Hanging Flume. We collected 76 SPD (we retained a large number of
specimens because many appeared similar to longnose dace), four RTC, one FMS, and 13 BHS.
The only other fish observed were catfish. Sampling at this site was completed in about two
hours.

The last site sampled with Sherman Hebein was also on the San Miguel River upstream from the
previous site near the Tabeguache Creek confluence at the old Uravan softball field. We
collected 24 SPD, eight RTC, four FMS, one BHS, and one white sucker in approximately one
and a halfhours.

9
