182 REPORT OF AN EXPEDITION DOWN THE

by Mr. Ker~', who wished me to try the wostern remedy; that is to say, to 'get
dmnk. This remedy I had often heard of, and, determined to try ita efficacy, I
commenced drinking whiskey. By the time I reached the pueblo I had drank
about half a pinl. During all this time I continued sucking the wound; then
taking some ammonia internally, I scarilicd thc linger, holding it in a basin of
warm water, which allowed it to bleed frcely. Already the glands in the axilla
were getting sore and painful. I commenccd drinking brandy ; alth~ same time
held my finger ina cup of ammonia. It tOO]l a quart of fourth-prool brandy',
bcsides the whiskey, to produce intoxication, which only lasted some four or live
hours. Dl1I'ing this state I ~'Olnited free I}'. Soon after coming to my senses, I
removed the ligature, uod applied a large pOlllliee of flaxseed, meal. I repeated
the ammonia internally, and took some III11SS "!I,h'g. and exl, collocynlh cl>mp. as a
cathartic. In the evening the glands ill the axilla were quite painful; so w~
also the linge.' ; took J,"lv. tlovel'i, grs. x.
had tho entire arm and hand painted with tinetuw of iodine, omI the poultiee
renewed; eOllllncnced laking )'OlllSsi io,/i.1i as an alterative. The pills not
having operated, tuok 111lh.. Sddlilz, which hadthc ,lesired ell'cel. Diet, boiled
the tincture of iodine.; removed ti,e skin from "ff the linger; it discharged
freely n walery, sangllinoons /lui,l, witllOntsmell ; tlm nail is becoming loose. The
hroad rud \ille following the course of the lymphatics is now lilled with yellow
serum. The poiut where the f.'1I1g eutered, fi)r the spuce of three-eights of an
inch, is of a ,Iark-hrown eo]or. This ol'enillg ILt Led-time took ma" hy,lrg., grs.
smell. The granulations do not present a healthy appearance; they are rougl~,
Ilnd mllny of them look as if they were sprinkled with yellow ochre. The na.l
is quite loose. Continued poldasii iodidi. Diet, mntton broth, with a little of
tbe meat. .' ,
Wedne;day, 24Ih.- This day we commenced our march; after going six miles,
encamped. I placed my hand in 'a sling, and it was with the greatest dillie.ulty
I could manage the mule with one hand, being ratber weak, and the amma1
rather obstinate. The sun was very hot; this, with the jolting, caused me to
I
suffer considerable pain.
I removed the nail; from this time the finger gradnally improve"'. Continued
the poullice until the last of October, whllll I applied cerale silllJlle:r. In the
mean time there WIlS a 1arge slough, which gradually came away and left the
last phalanx exposed in tIVO places. The granulations required ~ecasionally th.e
application or'the nitrate of silver. Continued with my hand 111 a sling until
about the middle of November.
A new nail com;nenced growing, and a small sinus remained in the end of the
finger, upon the introduction of a probe into which the bone could be felt 'Iuite
rough. A discharge from this kept until about the 7th of February, when I
removed the exfoliation of the end of the last phnlanx I showing evidently that
the fang had entered the periosteum. Soon afier this the sinus ~l~sed, leavi~g
it in 11 deformed state, anchylosis having taken 1.]ace in the first JOIl1l. 'Phe Cl~-
eulation is very imperfect, one of the arteries bein~ destroyed, which renders It
very susceptible to cold. . The insertion of the Ilexor muscle is o]so destroyed.
During the time we wero at Zuni, and on our march, up to the 91h of October,
there was but Jillle complaining of any kind, excepting nn occnsional diorrhrea.
From the 91h of October to the 1st of November, whilst we were all or about
the San Francisco ~ounlaill, quite a number of cnses of intermittent and billious
remittent fevers occurred' this, however, lasted but 0: short time, and yielded
',' .,
readily to treatment. . .
au Sunday, October 12, Enematio Valdez was struck in the heud by a stone
thrown by another Mexicnn during a dispute. "''\Then I wns called, Ite had nil the
symptoms of cqncussion of the brain, for which I treated him. , all the follow-
ing day he was quite rational, and on the succeeding was wnlkmg about camp
apparently well and in good spirits. On the morning of ~he ]5th, we moved
camp nbout twe!l'e miles; he rode a mule; the 'slln \Vas qUite warm; ma,le no
complaint after gelling into camp.
On the momingof the ]6th I was called to see him; the thermometer then
.tood at 200; found him perfeclly insensible ond cold, hal'ing symptoms of com-
prCSilioJ1 of the brain. After rolling him in blanlleta and placing him near~he
61e, I bled him and applied the necessary remedies, which appeared to rehevc
him immediately. On the 17th he wns apparenlly much better, and answered
~he 'lucstions l'utto him, but complained much of his head.. 011 lhe follo.wing
day he W09 agnin insensilJle and sinking fast, which he conllllneJ 10 do until the
/lloming of the 20th, when he died.
