REPORT OF AN EXPEDITION DOWN THE

Having the use of !lut one hand,l was una!lle to make lL post mortem exami-
nation. The great extremes of heat andcold at this time, J ihink, hastcned his
death.
On IHonday, November 3, about noon, our guide, Mr. Leroux, was severely
woundcd by the Cojninos Indians. Two of the arrows, armed with stone heads,
took effect; one, striking him un the left side of the head, behind the ear, after
cutting a groove in the ocdpital and temporal bone, broke in numerous pieces,
all of which I removed without diflieult)'. The w(lund healed without an)' bad
effects. The other entered the fore-arm, near. the wrist-joint; the head was
faimly imbedded in the radius. 1'his I attcmptcd to remove several times, by
seizing it with my forceps, which slipped at each effort, bringing away with them
a small piece of tile stone. I then cut down upon the .tone and exposed it;
placing my forceps undor line corner, made \lse of them as a levor, using my
thumh as thc fulcrulll. J succeeded in moving it slightly, in doing which I bent
my forceps, nnd mised a large blood-Llister on my thumb. Having to use so
much force, itll'as neeesHary to havo recourse to a pair of tooth-forceps, and
apply considerable force before f was alJle to remove it, so firmly was iL imbed.
!Ied in the bone, which was not even spliutered. This wOWld was very slow
IUlll sluggish ill healing; tlw pus, following the course of the tendons, formed
sinuses, which cuuscd him to sutler considerable pain.
Abouttllc 14th of N oyclllbcr, quite a Ilumber of UJC party were seized with
influenza. This I a Iso ob,crved allJong the Indillns.
0" the 17th of Novelnber we werc allllcked by the Yumas Indian.. One of
the soldiers, by the name of Jones, was brought into camp in a dyinlr condition,
having receivcd an rurow-wound in. the elbow-joint, which I suppose sickened
him; tllen rushing npon him, and using their clubs freely about lIis head, they
left him for dead. Whcn brought into cump he was insensible. I examined
his wounds, but conld not detect a fracLure or depression of the skill!. The
scalp was torn loose ill evcry direcl.ion, the face greatly swollen; breathing ster-
terous, almost pulseless. After reactiou lIad tnken place, I bled him. His pulse
rose, and breathing became more CllS)'. He, however, remained insensible until
the time of lIis death, which took place on the following morning about eight
o'clock. Two of the other soldicrs WIllC sliglltly wound~d at t/Ie same time.
The most of the party, from the 20lh to the last of the month, were afflicted
with diarrhren. which was caused by the entire use of fresh mule meat, without
condiments of any kind; IJIlt few (,f tile cases, bowel'er, required treatmelit.
On alii' arrival at the moutll of the Gjla riyer we were supplied with good
pro,'i8;on5, Log-ether wiLli anl,i.eorlJuLics, which pl'eyenled scurvy. with which
several of tho IUllty were afl'csdy tlu.eatcned.
I am, sir, with mucll respcct, your obedicnt sorvant, ,
