<br />SIR: 11ULve the honor to lay ,before YOll a report of the medical and snrgiclll
<br />cases I was called upon to treat while allached to your command as surgeon and
<br />naturalist, between Santa Fe, New Mexico, amI San Diego, Clllifornia.
<br />1 have introduceu one case in particull\T, in which I waS unfortunately the
<br />sufferer. 1 rcfer to the bite of the ralllesnake, (Crol"li~ Lecontii, Hallowell,)
<br />with its treatment, which may be of 50ll1e sel'vicr. to the profession, cspecially
<br />to those connected with the army.
<br />I have introduced in this report' only sllch cases as re'luired active trelltment,
<br />the patients not being fit for duty. '1 was frequently calle1lupoII by the men to
<br />prescribe; but the less importnnt "cases I have omill.ed.
<br />The general health of the party while on the lI1arch Ins excelIent, consiuer-
<br />ing the privations and hardships to which thcy were expo.ed. On leaving Sanla
<br />Fe, until our arrival at Zuni, there wa.s butlilt1e di"ellsc, with the exception of
<br />lL few cases of venereal.
<br />On Wednesda.y morning, the lith of September, 1851, while l,ielll. Parke and
<br />I \Vere walking out to procure some specimens of birds, whcn ab'uut two n:tiles
<br />from Zufii, in passing along an Indian trail, 1 came wit.hin a few inches of tread-
<br />ing upon 0. rattlesnake, which immediately, coiled himself lip anu prepared to
<br />!!trike. Jumping baek,l urew my ramrod,llnd"wilh it strllck him over the back,
<br />with cunicient forco to break il. Deing a fine specilllr.n, I wishellto preserve 'it
<br />without further injury I when, placing my glm on his he:ll] , 'lIlU seizing it, as I sup-
<br />posed, immediately back of the heau, picked him lip ; but, unfortnnately, I hau
<br />too long a holu, when he threw round his hcnu aflu buried his r.~ng in the side of
<br />the index finger of my left hand, about tho middle of the first phalanx. The
<br />pain ,vas intense, but momentarily producing 0. sickening sensalion. I immediate-
<br />ly commeneed sucking the wound; at the Sllrno time 1 got Lieul. P. to apply alig-
<br />ature round the finger,'to prevent the too rapid absorption of the poison. Scarl-
<br />tying the finger freely, I continued sucking thc wonn,] unlil I retnrned to camp.
<br />I sent 0. mnn, who was with us at the time, immediatcly hack to the pueh'lo, to
<br />brirtg me BOrne aqua allUlwnia Jodi'. He met me Ilbol/lthree-fol/rths of 11 mile
<br />Cront the pueblo. I immediately applied it freely 1..0 the wonn,I, whcn I wa~ met
