introductions is not known. Between 1899 and 1902, more plants
were made, but by 1903 few grayling had been taken by fisher-
men. The species was planted annually from 1934 to 1953 in
the high lakes and streams of Uintah, Duchesne, and Summit
counties (Popov and Low, 1953: 59-60). Self-sustaining popu-
lations now occur in several lakes.
Minnow and carp family

.Cyprinus carpio Linnaeus - carp. This well-known species, orig-
inally from Asia, was introduced into Utah about 1881 from
Washington, D.C., with the admonition that it was well to
replace "worthless varieties of fish" with carp (Popov and Low,
1953: 63). It is now abundant in warm waters of Utah and
even occurs in many colder waters.

GiLtJ atraria (Girard) - Utah chub.
Gilci robusta Baird and Girard - Colorado chub.
Gila robusta robusta Baird and Girard - roundtail
Gila robusta elegans Baird and Girard - bonytail. This com-
mon name is that recommended by the American Fisheries
Society for the species Gila robusta. However, this vernacular
is the one commonly used for G. r. elegans over its range in
suitable waters throughout the Colorado River Basin. We
recommend that the name Colorado chub be used for Gila
robusta, which is divisible into several subspecies.

Gila cypha Miller - humpback chub. This bizarre species has
been taken at only a few places in the swift portions of the
Colorado River Basin: the bottom of Grand Canyon, the Colo-
rado River near Moab, Utah; Whit~ River, just southeast of
Bonanza, Uintah Co., and in the section of the Green Rivel'
between Wyoming and Colorado. Formerly it was probably
more widespread in the Green and Colorado rivers but with
the advent of increasing numbers of dams and impoundments
it seems doomed to extinction.

Gila copei (Jordan and Gilbert) - leatherside chub. This species,
passing under the names of Snyderichthys aliciae and S. copei
in recent years, is here referred to the genus Gila on the basis
of unpublished studies by Teruya Uyeno (Osteology and Phyl-
ogeny of the American Cyprinid Fishes Allied to the Genus
