sions across divides have resulted in the mixing of once distinct
faunas, such as those of the Bonneville and Colorado Basins. Deple-
tion and gradual elimination of many of the native kinds appears to
be an inevitable consequence of advancing civilization.

This list comprises 10 families, 30 genera, and 49 species, of
which 23 have been successfully introduced. The .tptal number of
native species, 26, is only one more than that listed by Tanner
(1936) but, according to present nomenclature, that list actually
included only 19 full species. Tanner mentioned 23 introduced
species but of these, only 20 are now regarded as lull species and
six represent introductions that failed and hence are not included
in.-' the present enumeration. Those exotic species that failed to
Survive in Utah after stocking are also listed in this book. The
common name accepted for each species is, with a few exceptions,
that recommended in the second edition (1960) of "A List of
Common and Scientific Names of Fishes from the United States
and Canada," published by the American Fisheries Society as Spe-
cial Publication No.2, 102 pages. Introduced species are marked
by an asterisk. A great deal more information on mast of the fishes
is given in the section on life history (pp. 33-154).
.Oncorhynchus nerka (Walbaum) - kokanee (freshwater form).
This member of the true salmons (genus OnCDThynchus) was
first brought to Utah from Washington in 1922 and was intro-
duced into Bear Lake in 1923. The species was next planted in
Strawberry Reservoir in 1937. Additional plantings have been
made in other lakes and reservoirs (Popov and Low, 1953). The
kokanee is now probably present in limited munbers in Bear
Lake, East Canyon, Strawberry and Deer Creek and Scofield
Reservoirs and Panguitch Lake.
