H.
I 1
broad shallow reach is representative of much of the Yampa River
trend zone. A single Colorado squawfish was captured within
this reach in April 1977 (Prewitt, et al. 1977).
- Immediately below the bridge described above. This
reach is unique within the trend zone because of its depth and
low velocities, a product of head-cutting due to the hydraulic
control caused by the bridge footings. A Colorado squawfish was
captured here in August 1975 (Prewitt and Carlson, 1975).
White River - Approximately 1.8 km upstream from the Piceance
Creek Road Bridge (upper end of fish collection site C). This
run area is representative of much of the upper portion of the
White River trend zone in which dense streamside vegetation
offers stability and subsequent deep channel segments near con-
cave meander bends. Two Colorado squawfish were captured here
in May 1977 (Prewitt, et al. 1977).
- Directly upstream of County Road 65 Bridge, near the.
end of -iv-White River trend zone. This is a shallow area which
includes a vegetated alluvial island and characterizes most of
the White River trend zone below the Colorado Highway 64 Bridge.
Gunnison River - Benchmarked on the concrete base of a large irri-
gation pump approximately 200 m upstream of the Colorado Highway
141 Bridge south of Whitewater, Colorado (fish collection site A).
This run:bar sequence is representative of run areas above the
canyon area and some reaches in the lower canyon (but not the
boulder-strewn areas in the canyon). Holden and Stalnaker (1975)
report captures of Colorado squawfish in the lower Gunnison River
during the years 1967 to 1971.
