Other publ i shed works on the Archaic Peri ad on
the South Rim include those by Mc~utt and Euler (1966) and by Euler
(1 983 ) .

Thi s reveal ed
da tes for the

f1
r~<l
LJ

Less work has been done on the western section of the South Rim,
inhabited prehistorically by the Cohonina; therefore, research conducted
in areas farther south is considered. The description of northern
Ari zona pottery types in the early 1 930s by Hargrave and Col ton
(Hargrave 1933; Colton and Hargrave 1937) laid the framework for the
del ineation of the Cohonina Branch based primarilY on the presence of
San Franci sco fJountain Gray Ware (Hargrave 1937). Subsequent
exca\<ations at Pittsberg Village and 10 other sites north of Williams
establ ished dates for the occupation at approximatelY A.D. 700 to A.D.
1150 (Hargrave 1938). Survey and excavation in the vicinity of the San
Francisco Peaks lead Colton (1939, 1946) to place the Cohonina Branch
under the Patayan Root ~n the evi dence that it bore 1 i ttle resembl ance
to Anasazi, Mogoll on or Hohokam. Because of the compl ex intermixing of
the Cohoni na wi th Anasazi and Si nagua ceramics and features in the
F1 a9staff area, Colton (1946) recommended that research be conducted
farther west in the Cohonina heartland. Wilder's (1944) survey of the
Great Thumb on the South Rim of Grand Canyon was a start, but was
1 imi ted and r evea 1 ed on 1 y 30 si tes. Eul er and Jane s (Jones 1 9aO)
resurveyed Wilder's sites in 1979, and found that the data did not
su bs tant 1 ate his arch itec tu r a 1 sequenc e . Other work on the Hav a su pa 1
Reservation was carried out by Johnson and Hewitt (1971). In addition,
McGregor (1951, 1967) undertook the excavation of 17 sites in two
1 ocati ons south of the Grand Canyon. He proposed two foci for the'
Cohonina there that unfortunately were not correlated with those of
Colton. McGregor (1951, 1967) implied a Cohonina...Havasupai continuity.
Schwartz (1955, 1 956a, b) supported thi s idea, but Oobyns n 956) and
Eul er ( 1 958, 1963; Euler and Green 1978) rejected it, fi ndi ng no
evidence for occupation of the plateau or canyons between approximately

-,
"1

.1
.;,.;J

.:.:....,....iJ
..

'"

la.,.-'.
I

j
~j

U

r."
,..1
:,::.....1.j
"

tn
tJl

5
