t

sites were recorded by Gila Pueblo (Haury 1931) in the early 1930s.
Addi ti onal sampl e su rvey of 505 hectares (1 ,250 acres) was completed by
Effland, Jones and Euler (1981) in 1978. Eighty...five sites were
,located. Shiva Temple, a similar plateau, was surveyed briefly and
revealed alate Pueblo II Kayenta Anasazi occupation (Christenson 1972).
A survey of 273 sites on Walhalla Glades by E. T. Hall (1942)
preceded two other, projects there. The School' of American Research
(Schwartz, Kepp, and Chapman 1981) conducted survey and excavations in
1969 and 1970 directed at determining the relationship between canyon
and rim communi ti es. Of the 94 si tes recorded, 25 were tested or
excavated compl etely. Jones (1983b) undertook a sampl e survey in 1981
and located 84 sites. The environmental and cultural location of the
ubiquitous agricultural features were emphasized.
Farther west, R. A. Thompson, Southern Utah State College,
i nvesti gated the Tuweep Valley (Thompson 1970, 1971,1979; Thompson and
Thompson 1974, 1978). There the numerous Virgin Anasazi Basketmaker and
Pueblo sites range in age from around A.D. 1 to A.D. 1150. Teague and
McClell an (1978) su rveyed 1 ands adj acent to the park from Kanab to
Andrus canyons. While less than 1 percent of the land was surveyed, the
data gave an indication of the ephemeral nature of occupation in those
areas. Other limited surveys in the northwest section of the park
include those by Baldwin (1978); Evans, t4axon and Gale (1969), Holmer
(1977), and McClellan and Phillips (1978).
Other pub1 i shed works about North Rim archeology that are worth
consul ti n9 are those by Eul er and Chand1 er (1978); Eu1 er, Jones, Effl and
and Chandler (1980); Abbott (1979); Thompson (1976); and Fairley, Geib
and Ambler (1984). The ethnographic and ethnohistorical work on the
Southern Paiute is useful also (Euler 1964, 1966a, 1972; Kelly 1964;
Sapir 1910).
Led by Harold S. Gladwin and Emil W. Haury, the Gila Pueblo
undertook the first intensive survey on the South Rim near Desert View
(Gladwin 1930). Th~y later excavated Tusayan Ruin (Gladwin 1946; Haury
1931),. the present foc~s for the interpretation of Grand Canyon
archeology to the pub1;c. Wheat and Wheat (1954 ) excavated an early
Pueblo I pithouse nearby. Elsewhere in the eastern section of the South
Rim, Rice, Hfland and B1ank...Roper (1980) conducted a sample survey in

-'..-i

~

4
