Fish Health - We did not experience any major fish health problems during the
year. We Fad Learnea problems on the RBS and CSF broodstock; these outbreaks
F were treated with Masoten. The anchorworms on squawfish•appeared to be entirely
-]eared up by late summer but we continued treatments on the razorbacks up into
early November as water temperatures had remained high enough to allow Learnea
reproduction to continue. The Icthyophonus problem reported last year persists
but it has declined somewhat and currently appears to pose no long-term problem
to station operations. Low over winter survival of Comanche Springs pupfish and
Gila topminnow seem to be the major impact. Hatchery Biologist Ron Major conducted
the annual disease inspection and cleared RBS, CSF and BTC for stocking in Colorado
River drainage waters.
Preserved Specimens - The demand for preserved fish specimens continues. The
following agencies and institutions requested and received preserved specimens
during the year: the Mexican Government; the NM Department of Game and Fish,
the Arizona Game and Fish Department, the Utah Division of Wildlife and the
Colorado Division of Wildlife; Arizona State University, the University of
Nevada at Las Vegas, Eastern New Mexico University, the University of Michigan,
Kansas State University, the University of Texas, and the British Museum of
Natural History.
COOPERATION WITH OTHER AGENCIES AND INSTITUTIONS
We continue to work closely with State agencies, academic institutions, other
Service personnel, other concerened conservation groups and southeastern New
Mexico school systems. We continue to provide fish to Arizona under negotiated
cooperative agreements and distribute requested fish for them. Theop spent two
months with the State of Kansas assisting with fish culture efforts on walleye,
smallmouth bass, spotted bass and striped bass. Connie assisted Charlie Sanchez
in collecting fish samples for environmental contaminant evaluation. We fre-
quently assisted the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish by providing equipment
or holding fish for them. Dexter continues to serve as a "water change" station
on long RDU hauls. Roger gave presentations and demonstrations on hormone use in
fish culture to an NMSU graduate class in fisheries and the student chapter AFS
meeting. Buddy attended career day at Hobbs High School. Sharon spent several
days in the Regional Office helping organize and set up a regional fishery filing
system. Troy spent two weeks on the RDU. We conducted CSF seining experiments
for the Colorado River Fishery Project. We accommodated three people from Monty
Stouffer Productions who spent several days shooting film for an upcoming PBS
special documentary on "Native Fishes in Trouble". At regional request, Theop
conducted a special water quality study on selected management units at Bitter
Lake NWR. As part of the study a load of CCF where marked prior to stocking in
refuge waters. Buddy continues to serve on the Rio Grande Fishes Recovery Team
working with personnel from the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish, Texas
Parks and Wildlife, Soil Conservation Service, Bureau of Reclamation, National
Park Service, Oklahoma State University, the University of Texas, and the Republic
of Mexico. We shipped live and preserved fish to the many agencies and institutions
previously mentioned.

OTHER ACTIVITIES
Assisted by the Justice Department, Service personnel appeared before State
Justice Lafel E. Oman for relief from existing water right allotments rendered
when shallow water in the Pecos Valley Conservancy District was adjudicated in 1973.
