Juvenile Gila, and YOY Ictalurus, respectively, contained more invertebrate
remains than those of other fish. On the basis of ranked mean weights,
stomachs of YOY G. robusta and YOY Ptychocheilus contained more invertebrate
remains than those of other fish at Stratum X and Stratum A, respectively.
Stomachs of Juvenile Gila and Adult N. lutr?en_sis at Stratum VI contained
more invertebrate remains than those of other fish; and stomachs of YOY
N. lutrensis at Stratum F contained more invertebrate remains than those of
all other fish except YOY Gila and YOY Ptychocheilus.
Hydracharina
This rare food item is a component of the benthic habitat and is
associated with vascular plants and algae. Hydracharina (water mites) were
consumed by one Juvenile G. robusta at Stratum V11.
Zooplankton
Zooplankton were represented by three crustaceans. Copepods (cope-
pods) young or nauplii are planktonic or benthic in habitat. Ostracoda
(seed shrimp)are benthic with some movement just above the substrate and
Daphniidae (water fleas) are primarily planktonic. Zooplankton were a
minor diet item for one endangered fish species, YOY Ptychocheilus, and
four non-endangered species, YOY N. lutr_5. YOY Pimephales, YOY
C. latipinnis, and YOY Icta_ lulus. At Stratum X, YOY C. latipinnis
consumed significantly more zooplankton than did YOY G. robe ta-
Diptera
Diptera was composed of 6 families with 4 genera of Chironomidae as
the most frequently occurring food category. All of these are common
benthic organisms living on vegetation (algae and vascular plants) or
Psychodidae,
gravel, sand, and rubble substrates. Chironomidae,
Tipulidae, and Stratiomyidae are primarily collectors-scrapers of debris
