20
and microvegetation; Ceratopogonidae are predators on smaller invertebrates;
and Simuliidae are filter feeders.
All fish except Adult Killifish consumed Diptera. The Juvenile
Ictalurus consumed significantly more Diptera than other fish over all
strata and at Stratum B. YOY Ictalurus consumed significantly more than
other fish at Strata A, C, D, and E. At Stratum F, YOY Gila consumed
significantly more than all other fish except YOY Ptychocheilus.
Coleoptera
Beetles were a minor food item composed primarily of Elmidae (Riffle
Beetles). These are collectors and gatherers of debris in the benthic
habitat.
YOY Ictalurus consumed significantly more Coleoptera than other fish
over all strata and at Stratum A.
Trichoptera
Caddisflies were dominated by Hydropsyche (collector-filterer);
Glossosoma and Hydroptilidae (both scrapers) were not as abundant. All of
these are benthic in habitat but are an important component of the drift.
On the basis of raw weights, YOY Ictalurus consumed significantly
more Trichoptera than all other fish except YOY C. latipinnis, but on the
basis of ranked weights, Adult Rhinichthys consumed more than other fish.
At Stratum VI, Juvenile Gila consumed significantly more Trichoptera than
did other fish and at Strata A and B, YOY Ictalurus consumed significantly
more Trichoptera than did other fish.
