18
Fish were consumed only by YOY Ptychocheilus at Strata A, C, D, E, and
F and Juvenile G. robusta at Stratum VI. For total strata the mean weight
for YOY Ptychocheilus was significantly larger than for G. robusta
(p = .0001 for raw and ranked data). Mean weightsfor fish were significantly
larger than zero at Strata A, C, D, and E.
Terrestrials
This category was a minor component of fish diets. Organisms were
associated with riparian vegetation and either fell from overhanging
vegetation or were blown into the water. Formicidae (ants) and occasional
small Arachnida (spiders) were the most numerous representatives.
On the basis of ranked mean weights, Juvenile G. robusta consumed
significantly more terrestrial invertebrates than other fish over all strata.
At Stratum A, YOY Ictalurus consumed more than other fish.
Invertebrate Remains
This encompassing category included all invertebrate fragments ranging
from legs, compound eyes, portions of the exoskeleton (thorax and abdomen),
to wings. Invertebrate remains, the dominant food item category, was
composed of 9 invertebrate subcategories (Figure 2).
Invertebrate remains were found in stomachs of all fish except YOY
N. stramineus, Adult Killifish, YOY C. discobolus, YOY C. latipinnis, and
Juvenile Ictalurus. Stomachs of Juvenile G. robusta contained significantly
more invertebrate remains than those of other fish over all strata. Stomachs
of Adult N. lutrensis contained significantly more invertebrate remains than
other fish at Stratum IV; and significantly more than all other fish except
YOY Ptychocheilus and YOY N. lutrensis at Stratum B on the basis of ranked
mean weights. At Strata V11, C, and D, stomachs of Juvenile G. robusta,
