Utah Division of Wildlife personnel conducting the scheduled spring monitoring
work. This should faci'li'tate broodstock collection with the least amount of
effort and duplication of sampling. Sampling by the three agencies will be
conducted between Rifle, CO and 'the confluence of the Colorado and Green
Rivers.
Capture methods will consist of seines, trammel nets, trap nets,
electrofishing and/or a combination of these methods. Care should be taken to
handle the fish as little as possible. Likewise, the amount of time the fish
is out of the water should be kept to an absolute minimum. Upon capture the
fish should be placed into an aerated live well or large (100-150 qt.) corder
equipped with oxygen, regulator and carbon diffuser. These holding containers
in the boat should contain river water and a 0.59 salt solution (by weight of
water). The salt solution will help mitigate the loss of blood electrolytes
due to handling stress.
If more fish are captured than can be adequately held in the holding
tanks, the net cribs will be used to hold fish in the river. Likewise, if
fish need to be held overnight before the distribution unit arrives, net cribs
in the river will again be used. Common sense and good judgment need to be
exercised at all times. _F•ield personnel are given complete discretion to
determine the feasibility of successfully transporting 'these wild fish. if
the researcFier determines that the risks involved in a particular situation
are too great, the fish should be returned 'to the river.
The Fish and Wildlife Service (Grand Junction CRFP office) will be
responsible for hauling fish from the river take-out points to dexter NFFI,
Dexter, New Mexico.
