Fish and Wildlife Service, CRFP
529 25-1/2 Road, Suite B-110
Grand Junction, Colorado 81505
(303) 245-9319
Fish will be transported to Dexter NFH in an aerated fish distribution
unit containing a 0.5% salt solution and 5 ppot Furacin (antibacterial
compound). Fish will be taken to dexter as soon as enough have been ca'l'lected
to warrant making a trip. In no case will fish be held in the river for more
than 72 hours. If there aren't enough fish (at least three) to make a trip,
'they will be released into the river.
Dexter NFH has 'the facilities and the qualified personnel to handle these
fish. Upon arrival, at Dexter each fish will be weighed, measured and checked
for PIT 'tag retention. If a 'tag is missing Dexter will re-mark with a PIT
tag. Collecting this data at the hatchery will reduce the handling required
in the field and help standardize techniques by limiting the number of people
collecting and recording data. Fish will be quarantined, inspected and
treated for disease as appropr'ia'te before being stocked into hatchery ponds,
C.) Genetic SamRlIncj Methodologies
Prior to being placed into hatchery ponds, fin tissue could be removed
from these fish for genetic electrophoresis analysis. Although this fin
tissue analysis cannot be considered all inclusive, it does provide anon-
lethal means to start answering genetic questions. It must be remembered that
electrophoresis detects only a small part of the genetic variation with-in and
4
9001900•a 99fi9# 01HIN '621 G 0 £i9 b£L qOG 0 0:ni gn07..rn•WVW
