'.r
Because these wild populations are not stable it is critical to get
started this year. We propose to collect ten adult males and ten adult
females of both species for broods toc k/refug i a development sta7rt•ing spring
1590. Finding and capturing this number of adult fish will be difficult and
may not be accomplished in one year.
A location in the Grand Valley to hold these broodstock would be -Ideal
but 'lack of su•itable, facilities precludes that presently. The FWS, CDOW and
BR are currently exploring the possibilities of using ponds at Morsethief
State Wildlife Area to satisfy this need in the future. In the 'Interim, we
propose to collect adult fish from -the upper Colorado River and transport them
'to Dexter NFH, Dexter, New Mexico for a number of reasons./ Dexter currently
has three upper Colorado River razorback sucker adults (Z males and 1 female),
Plus this station has the facilities, capabilities and the qualified personnel
to handle these fish. Although they do have Colorado squawfish broodstock,
they are relatively old and the origin (genetic makeup) of these fish is
unknown. Any adult fish transported 'to Dexter would be marked with a PIT tag
in the body cavity so that individual fish could be readily identified.
If facilities become available in the Grand Valley area 'then these
broodstock could and should be transported to Colorado.
B.) Ca t re nd landl i n Protocol
Refugia/broodstock populations of Colorado squawfish and razorback sucker
need to be developed from wild fish from the upper Colorado River basin. The
following protocol and narrative have been developed to provide specific
guidance and procedures to maximize success of such. acquisitions. Personnel
from Grand Junction CRFP office will be responsible for broodstock collection.
FWS collection efforts however, will be coordinated with both Colorado and
z
900/coo•a 49b4# O1H9X 'dR1X2C OET9 tEL 909 00:01 9OOZ,TO-dvH
