As Northern Water delivers increasing amounts
of water to municipalities, it is ever expanding its ut•ban water conservation efforts.
Northern Water and its Municipal Subdist~~ct operate and maintain the Colorado-Big
Thompson Project and 1~Vindy Gap Project, respectively. These deliver water from the
West S lope to the East S lope. When the C-BT project came online in 1957, 98 percent of
all C-BT water deliveries were for agricultural irrigation. Today, almost 4~ percent of C-
BTwater isdelivered for munac~pal and industrial uses. Deliveries to cities and rural
domestic water providers increase each yea~•.
Recognizing that mo~•e and mote of the water fj•om these projects was being delivered for
urban use -and understanding that at least half of all water consumed in urban
environments is used for outdoor irrigation -~ Northern Water created its Landscape
Water Management and Conservation Pz•ogram in 1994. The program's goal ~s to educate
landscape industry professionals, water conservation specaalasts and the general public
about using water wisely outdoors. Northern Water staff members conduct many
demonstl•ationsond studies that yield information for both professionals and the general
public. Many of those demonstrations are showcased at The Conservation Gardens at
Northern Water.
The Conservation Gardens in the back yard off` Northern Water's Berthoud facility
comprise a 2.5-acre outdoor laboratory that demonstrates landscape and irrigation best
management practices. The Conservation Gardens have areas showcasing native grasses,
new varzeties of turfgrasses, spi~nkler system technology and water-wise landscaping
techniques.
The Conservation Gardens ai-e always open, including evenings and weekends. Northern
Water gets visitors both during and outside of business hours.
The back yard of Northern Water also includes the Interpretive Area, which is a
conceptual model of the Colorado-Big Thompson Project through which visitors can
walk and see how water begins as snowmelt and travels through WVest Slope reservoirs
