Diversions into storage are also reflected under the Julesburg Reservoir Inlet Ditch
(WDID 6400512). Total historical diversions for the Julesburg Reservoir Inlet Ditch
appear to reflect storage and direct flow water used within the District and average
approximately 18,500 cfs per year.
2) Julesburg Reservoir (Structure ID 6403906)
Julesburg Reservoir is an off-channel storage facility located in Water District 64 approximately
25 miles upstream from the Colorado -Nebraska state line on the north side of the South Platte
River. Julesburg Reservoir is situated between the Towns of Crook and Sedgwick and on the
Sedgwick -Logan County Line. The reservoir was completed in 1906 and is used for irrigation
and recreational purposes.
The original embankments at Julesburg Reservoir consisted of five earthen dams (1, 2, 3, 3A, &
4) that impounded the reservoir on the northeast edge. An additional dam (5) was later
constructed to supplement freeboard. Two of the five dams have concrete faces and the
remaining three have riprap faces. In 1910, No. 2 dam failed due to an outlet pipe failure. The
dam was reconstructed without the outlet. Reconstructive work took place in the early 1990's to
repair deteriorated dam embankments. The improvements and repairs mainly consisted of the
installation of toe-drains and sand filters to control seepage.
Julesburg Reservoir has one original spillway located on the
north side of the No. 4 dam. The spillway is triangular in
shape at a gage height of 30.0 feet. Anew outlet structure
was constructed in the early 1990's due to deterioration of the
original outlet. Releases from the current outlet structure are
made through the structure located near the floor of the
reservoir and piped under the embankment. The outlet works
that regulate releases into the Highline Canal consist of twin
42" x 48" gates and are capable of releasing 700 cfs, although
the canal capacity constrains the releases to 250 cfs.
Capacity:
Total Storage: 28,178 acre-feet
Currently restricted to 22,666 acre-feet
(elevation 24.0 feet)
Active Storage: 22,666 acre-feet
Dead Storage: none
Julesburg Reservoir Outlet Structure
Area/Capacity Data: Reservoir capacity surveyed in 1904.
