District for storage in the reservoir and direct flow water for the Harmony Ditch No. 1 Company
for irrigation. The ditch also serves as an alternate point of diversion for the District's direct
flow rights on Settlers Ditch.
The diversion works of Harmony Ditch No. 1 consist of a single structure equipped with an
Obermeyer® pneumatically operated gate. The diversion structure will divert the entire river
and return any unused flow via a wasteway. The ditch is unlined for the extent of its length,
which has not varied over time, and is in satisfactory condition.
Length: Approximately 24 miles.
Capacity: The capacity of Harmony Ditch No. 1 is 450 cfs. Over time obstructions and
sedimentation have limited the capacity to as low as 180 cfs. Recent maintenance work
on the ditch has brought the capacity back to the original rate of 450 cfs. The District
cooperates with the Harmony Ditch No. 1 Company to limit the diversion rate to 350 cfs.
Measurement Device: Diversion measurements on Harmony Ditch No. 1 are made using a 20'
Parshall flume with clock recorder located downstream of the wasteway and
approximately one-quarter mile downstream from the diversion. This clock recorder is
linked to satellite, enabling the Water Commissioner to download the readings. These
records reflect the direct flow diversions for the Harmony Ditch Company and the
storage diversions for the District.
Measurements of diversions into storage are made using a 30' rectangular weir with
clock recorder located just upstream of the reservoir. The Water Commissioner is
responsible for collecting the records from both of the measurement devices on the ditch.
Conveyance Efficiency: Harmony No. 1 Ditch has historically benefitted from return flows
from the North Sterling Irrigation District, ranging from 20 to 30 cfs.
Return Flow Locations: Harmony No. 1 Ditch is considered a gaining ditch and does not
experience seepage losses. Return flows from irrigation on lands associated with the
Harmony Ditch No. 1 Company generally accrue to either the South Platte River or
Settlers Ditch. Those return flows accrued to Settlers Ditch are used to serve District
lands under Settlers Ditch.
Irrigated Crops: Harmony Ditch No. 1 does not serve to directly irrigate lands in the District.
The ditch does deliver irrigation water directly to the Harmony Ditch No. 1 Company
service area, which includes approximately 6,000 acres. Crops grown in the Harmony
Ditch No. 1 Company service area include wheat, alfalfa, and sugar beets.
HydroBase Data: Total historical diversions through Harmony Ditch No. 1 are available from
1950 to 2002 and average approximately 32,500 acre-feet per year. For portions of the
period of record, there is a distinction between water delivered to storage and direct flow
water used for irrigation.
Julesburg Irrigation District.doc Page 6 of 12
