The spillway is at gage height of 30.0.
Enlargement History: Julesburg Reservoir has never been enlarged.
Reservoir Seepage/Evaporation Information: No studies have been conducted to quantify
seepage losses from Julesburg Reservoir although large seepage losses are experienced.
A constant inflow of 30 cfs a day is required to offset these losses. Historically, return
flows collected by the Harmony No. 1 Ditch from irrigation in the North Sterling
Irrigation District provided enough flow to offset the losses. However, as sprinkler use
has increased in the North Sterling Irrigation District, return flows in Harmony No. 1
Ditch decreased and seepage losses from the reservoir are not being offset.
Reservoir seepage generally accrues to the lands directly below the reservoir and to
Settlers Ditch. Any seepage water collected in the ditch is used on District lands served
by the ditch.
The "Julesburg Irrigation District Seepage Investigation" (M.S. Thesis, Colorado State
University), a seepage loss study, was performed by William F. Strand to better
understand the channel conveyance efficiency of the Highline Canal.
Reservoir Storage Measurement: Storage levels in Julesburg Reservoir are measured using a
tape-measuring device without a recorder. The Superintendent for the District is
responsible for collecting and reporting the end-of--month storage amount to the Water
Commissioner in Water District 64.
Irrigated Crops: There are a total of 19,134.27 bonded irrigated acres within the District.
Irrigation water is conveyed throughout the District via the Highline Canal, Settlers Ditch
and Petersen Ditch. All three of the District canals are approximately 21 miles in length.
The Petersen Ditch directly serves approximately 8,000 acres, with the remaining acreage
evenly served by the Highline Canal and Settlers Ditch. There are approximately 6
shares (80 acres/share) that reside under the Petersen Ditch that are not bonded land
owners within the District. There are also numerous acres in Nebraska that receive direct
flow irrigation water from Petersen Ditch but are not included in the District.
