3) Fort Morgan Canal (Structure ID 0100514)
The Fort Morgan Canal headgate is located on the south side of the South Platte River and
directly irrigates lands under the canal. The unlined canal travels in a general southeasterly
direction to serve lands southeast of the City of Fort Morgan. The canal is siphoned under Bijou
Creek at their intersection. The canal also provides deliveries to the Western Sugar Plant via a
lateral located just south of the State Routes 144 & 76 junction. The 200 foot diversion structure
at the river consists of a 50 foot in length cement wall and twelve vents at 12 foot widths each.
Length: Approximately 30 miles
Capacity: The capacity of Fort Morgan Canal is 323 cfs, although operationally Fort Morgan
limits its diversions to approximately 285 cfs to prevent possible canal damage.
Measurement Device: Diversion measurements are made using a 20 foot weir with clock
recorder located approximately '/z mile downstream from the river diversion structure.
The measurement device is maintained and rated by the State and the Water
Commissioner is responsible for collecting records from this device. A check structure in
the canal allows for measurements of the diversions to the Western Sugar Plant, although
the Sugar Plant diversions are included in the overall diversion records for the Fort
Morgan Canal.
Jackson Lake Reservoir System Page 9 of 14
Figure 2: Jackson Reservoir Historical Storage Records (black line) and Recommended
Storage Records for Surface Water Model (red line after 1989)
