Conveyance Efficiency: The Home Supply Ditch is considered a losing ditch but only
experiences about 8 percent to 10 percent shrink down the ditch between the river
headgate and Lone Tree Reservoir. The Home Supply Ditch has not historically benefited
from significant amounts of return flows from and runoff from up-gradient lands.
Return Flow Locations: Return flows from lands irrigated by the Company water supplies
typically accrue based on their location:
• Return flows from irrigated parcels located above Lone Tree Reservoir accrue to
South Side Ditch system.
• Return flows from irrigated parcels located north of the Home Supply Ditch below
Lone Tree Reservoir accrue to the Big Thompson River, and
• Return flows from irrigated parcels located south of the Home Supply Ditch below
Lone Tree Reservoir accrue to the Little Thompson River.
Irrigated Crops: Approximately 16,500 acres are irrigated under the Consolidated Home
Supply Ditch and Reservoir Company system, according to Company representatives.
For reference, 15,000 acres are listed in the HydroBase database under the Home Supply
Ditch. According to Company representatives, crops grown under the ditch vary from
year-to-year but typically include corn, alfalfa, small grains, and sugar beets. All lands
are flood-irrigated although sprinklers have been installed on about 2 percent of the
irrigated lands over the last 5 years.
HydroBase Data: The monthly data available in HydroBase over the 1950-2002 period of
record pertaining to the Home Supply Ditch include the following:
Total River Diversions
• Complete record over 1950-2002 (see Figure 2)
• Historic diversion average of approximately 31,500 ac-ft/yr
Diversion classes (DivClass) include:
• River diversions for irrigation average of approximately 11,600 ac-ft/yr
• River diversions for storage average of approximately 8,300 ac-ft/yr
• River diversions, by exchange, for Mariano Reservoir storage releases of
approximately 4,500 ac-ft/yr
• From transbasin supplies
- Approximately 8,500 ac-ft/yr, on average 1955-1973
- Approximately 3,000 ac-ft/yr, on average 1974-2002
Home Supply Ditch Operating Memorandum.doc 5 of 15 February 16, 2005
