PHYSICAL INFORMATION
The town of Johnstown and approximately 16,500 acres of land located to the south and
southeast of Loveland are supplied with ditch company water. River diversions are conveyed
from the Big Thompson River near the canyon mouth. Three off-channel reservoirs are utilized
for late season irrigation deliveries. These units have a total active storage capacity of
approximately 20,000 acre-feet (ac-ft). Lone Tree Reservoir is the largest of the three storage
units (9,068 ac-ft active storage capacity) operated to regulate water along the lower reaches of
the ditch system via the Home Supply Ditch and Lake Ditch systems. Mariano Reservoir
(approximately 5,476 ac-ft active storage capacity), filled by the George Rist Ditch and Lon
Hagler Reservoir (approximately 5,148 ac-ft active storage capacity), under the Home Supply
Ditch, release water to the river for replacement of water diverted, by exchange, at the Home
Supply Ditch headgate for late-season irrigation uses.
Infrastructure information related to the ditch headgate, ditch layout, on-ditch reservoirs and
exchange/replacement reservoirs is summarized below.
1) Home Supply Ditch (Structure ID 0400524)
The Home Supply Ditch headgate is located on the south side of the Big Thompson River on a
river diversion dam shared with the City of Loveland's Loveland Pipeline diversion structure,
which diverts from the north side of the river. The Home Supply Ditch travels in a southeasterly
direction towards Lone Tree Reservoir.
The diversion works of the Home Supply Ditch consist of two slide gates on the river. The ditch
is unlined for the majority of its length and is in satisfactory condition. A portion of the ditch
below Lone Tree Reservoir is concrete-lined.
Length: Approximately 8 miles from the river to Lone Tree Reservoir. Total system
conveyance length, including Lake Ditch delivery system below Lone Tree Reservoir
outlet, filler ditches for reservoirs, and various Company laterals is approximately 48
miles.
Capacity: The capacity of Highline Ditch is 325 cubic feet per second (cfs)
Measurement Device: Diversions through the Home Supply Ditch are measured via a 12'
Parshall~Bristol flume with a clock recorder located about 75 feet down ditch. This clock
recorder is linked to satellite, enabling the Water Commissioner to download the
readings. These records reflect the direct flow and storage diversions to Lon Hagler
Reservoir and Lone Tree Reservoir for the Consolidated Home Supply Ditch and
Reservoir Company.
Measurements of diversions into storage are made based on changes in end-of--month
storage contents.
Home Supply Ditch Operating Memorandum.doc 4 of 15 February 16, 2005
