The Pipeline was constructed between 1963 and 1967. Numerous modifications and renovations
related to South Platte Basin imports have occurred since the initial completion in 1967 including
the extension of the primary Pipeline inlet to Twin Lakes Reservoir and adding a valve to
discharge water upstream of Spinney Mountain Reservoir. Other modifications (new pump
stations, capacity enlargement) have been or are being made by Colorado Springs for the benefit
of Colorado Springs.
The Pipeline to Aurora's discharge location is constructed of 66 inch diameter pre-tensioned
concrete and steel (in higher pressure sections). The Pipeline reduces to 48 inches in diameter
downstream of Aurora's original discharge valve upstream of Eleven Mile Reservoir.
Length: Unknown.
Capacity: 118.5 MGD capacity.
Diversion Measurement Device: DWR gives the following location information for the
HOMSPICO station used to measure releases from the Homestake Pipeline into the South
Platte Basin.
USGS ID: HOMSPICO -Aurora Homestake Pipeline to Spinney Reservoir
It should be noted that location information provided by HydroBase for the HOMSPICO
station does not correspond with the location information for historic measuring devices
provided by Aurora. Based on preliminary mapping provided by Aurora, the following
are approximate locations (in latitude and longitude) of the historic measuring devices
that measured Pipeline water into the South Platte Basin.
Above Eleven Mile Reservoir: 38°52'51', 105°32'04" NAD 27
Above Spinney Mountain Reservoir: 38°54'50", 105°41'21" NAD 27
Measurement of Aurora deliveries through the Homestake Pipeline are made with
Venturi flow meters installed near the discharge point. Prior to the early 1980s, the
discharge valve and Venturi flow meter for measuring water into the South Platte Basin
was located upstream of Eleven Mile Reservoir. Records were found in State records for
1981 and 1982 under the Colorado Station identifier of AHOMPLCO. Though records
existed for 1999 under Station identifier AHOMPLCO, these records are believed to be
more appropriately associated with the gage described in the next paragraph. We
understand that this gage had an automatic recorder (circular strip chart) for recording the
flows.
With the construction of Spinney Mountain Reservoir in the early 1980s, the Pipeline and
therefore the primary discharge valve and Venturi flow meter for measuring water into
the South Platte Basin was moved to a small drainage upstream of Spinney Mountain
Reservoir. Records were found in State records for water year 2000 through 2002 under
the Colorado Station identifier HOMSPICO. The 1999 diversion records recorded under
identifier AHOMPLCO probably should be included with the HOMSPICO Station
4of10
