In general, the Northern system is primarily operated to supply
water to meet Denver Water's service contract and fixed contract agreements with northern
municipalities (currently about 30,000 ac-ft/yr). The Southern system is generally operated to
meet demands within the City and County of Denver and eastern municipalities. The Southern
system typically supplies 80 to 85 percent of the raw water demand for the Denver Water system
but, as stated above, Denver Water can move water around and throughout their system to ensure
water deliveries are made.
Water deliveries to be used for potable resources are treated at the Moffat, Marston, or Foothills
water treatment plants. In addition, some water is delivered for industrial and irrigation uses and
to maintain instream minimum flow requirements along the South Platte River.
Denver Water's total demand was approximately 285,000 ac-ft/yr in 2005, corresponding with a
population of about 1.2 million in the City and County of Denver and surrounding areas. This
demand level equates to approximately 210 gallons per capita per day (gpcd). The currently
anticipated future water demand level for the year 2050 is about 420,000 ac-ft/yr for a population
of about 2.3 million, which corresponds to an overall unit demand of about 165 gpcd.
Approximately 50 to 55 percent of the annual demand is delivered to satisfy a typical, year-round
municipal demand. The remaining 45 to 50 percent of the annual demand is delivered to satisfy
commercial, industrial, and other uses. This latter demand typically has higher year-round
monthly deliveries than the residential demand curve but still has shows a summer peak
associated with irrigation demands that are part of the commercial, industrial, and other demands
supplied by Denver Water's system.
Denver Water Board Operating Memorandum 33 of 40
