Consumptive Ilse
The consumptive use of Denver Water's potable diversions for in-house, residential uses is 5
percent. Denver Water's monthly consumptive use is higher throughout the year due to industrial
uses and outdoor uses. Estimates of monthly consumptive use percentages are included in Table
12.
Table 12
Municipal Consumptive Use Rates
Month Percent of Water Consumed
Jan 22
Feb 22
Mar 26
Apr 45
May 61
Jun 70
Jul 73
Aug 71
Sep 65
Oct 45
Nov 24
Dec 21
Source: Denver Water
Note: Consumptive use rates include municipal, industrial, and outdoor use consumption
The reuse of lawn irrigation return flows (LIRFs) associated with diversions has not been
adjudicated. Denver Water is currently analyzing LIRFs associated with its operations to better
quantify the amounts and locations of return flows associated with reusable transbasin supplies
and changed water rights.
Water Supply
The Denver Water system uses a varied water rights and water supply portfolio that is managed
on a daily basis to ensure demands are met and to allow operational flexibility to address various
infrastructure needs, repairs, down time, etcetera. Denver Water's goal is to first use available
South Platte River supplies before using its supplies from the western slope. Although
complexities of a system this large require constant monitoring, a general order of operations
used to meet the Denver Water demands are as follows:
1) Direct flow rights from South Platte River basin
2) Reusable effluent exchanges from Metro WWTP and Littleton-Englewood WWTP to
upstream diversion points
3) Water from various sources may also be used to replace junior upstream diversions made
throughout the system
4) Releases from storage near water treatment plants (Strontia Springs Reservoir, Marston
Reservoir, Ralston Reservoir)
5) Transbasin Deliveries (Moffat Tunnel and Roberts Tunnel) to demand or to storage
6) Releases from Storage (Gross Reservoir, Antero Reservoir, Eleven Mile Reservoir,
Cheesman Reservoir, Chatfield Reservoir)
Denver Water Board Operating Memorandum 34 of 40
