Title
SPDSS Task 5 - Key Structure, Boreas Pass Ditch
Description
The Boreas Pass Ditch has been identified as a key structure for the South Platte Decision Support System (SPDSS) consumptive use and surface water modeling efforts. The purpose of this Task 5 memorandum is to document physical, legal, and operational aspects of those key structures identified.

Water transferred through Boreas Ditch is assessed the following stream losses as it is
conveyed to Chatfield Reservoir from the Ditch headgate.
Boreas Ditch headgate to TARBORCO streamgage = 2.8 percent
TARBORCO streamgage to Cheesman Reservoir = 2.6 percent
Cheesman Reservoir to Strontia Springs Reservoir = 2.5 percent
HydroBase Data: Diversions through Boreas Pass Ditch are reported as continuously
monitored streamflow records and as administrative records by Colorado DWR.
Continuously monitored streamflow records for Station 09046000 are available from
prior to 1950 through water year 2002 on a daily and monthly basis. Administrative
records for Structure 2304611 are available sporadically for daily and monthly diversions
from 1951 through 2002. Administrative data for Structure 3604685 are available
sporadically for daily and monthly diversions from 1970 through 2002. Both
continuously monitored streamflow records and administrative diversion records are
available through Colorado DWR HydroBase. Additionally, since 1991 the City of
Englewood has maintained daily diversion records for Boreas Pass Ditch.
Available diversion data for Boreas Pass Ditch was reviewed and compared to identify
the best available data source (shown in Figure 2). The preferred set of data identified for
Boreas Pass Ditch was the continuously monitored data for Station 09046000. When
compared to the other available information sources, the data at Station 09046000
displayed the following characteristics:
• The longest period of record,
• The most complete set of data prior to and throughout the period of study,
• Corresponding monthly and daily diversion data available, and
• Continues to be operated as a recording device through present.
Figure 2
Boreas Pass Ditch
Historic Diversions -Calendar Year 1950 - 2002
500 .. ., .. ., _ m _ .., ., m ., ., ., ., m ., ., m .. ,. _ .. ,. ,. ., m ., .,
450
400 ~-i-i-I-+r+++-i-i-r++ i +-i-i-i-r++++-i-i-i-rr+++-i-i-I-++t++
I l l i i i i l i l l i l i i l i l l i l i l l i l l i i i l l l l i l l i l
`~ ~ I l l i i i i l i l l i l i i l i l l i l i l l i l l i i i l l l l i l l i l
v
~, 350 '+-i-+++++++-i-i-++++~+-i-i-++++~-i-i-~+++~-i-i-+~ ~ k+~
w° iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii
ai 300 - L L L 1 1 J _I -i- L L L 1 1 J _I -i- i- ~ i l ~ ~ _i _ L ~
~' 250 _ i 1__i__i_i__ i -__ i_i__i_i
o i i i i i i i i i i i i i i i
> 200 ---------- -----
Ca iiiiiiiii iiii
m
~, 150 i + -i-~-
d
100 IInII
50 ~ II ~ II~~ II ~~ ~ II
Oiuuuuuuuuuuuuu u u u e
Year
BoreasPassDitch.doc 5 of 8
