PHYSICAL INFORMATION
Boreas Pass Ditch originates in Water Division
5 District 36 and terminates in Water Division
1 District 23 in Park County.
In 1909 Boreas Pass Ditch was first put to use.
The Ditch was historically used to provide
irrigation water to irrigators on the Eastern
Slope. The original Ditch was an earth-lined
canal. In the early-1990's, various
improvements were made to the Ditch to
modify how the ditch traveled through U.S.
Park Service property. A portion of the ditch
was put underground; the underground pipe
was constructed with inlets along the length of
the pipe to capture inflow. In addition, a new
Parshall flume was installed in association with
the early-1990 improvements.
Looking Northwest from Boreas Pass.
Boreas Pass Ditch collects water on this side of the
divide and transports the water to the Southeast
Length: Approximately 0.8 miles (Does not include 3/4 mile pipe to North Terryall Creek)
Capacity: Estimated capacity 8 cfs
Diversion Measurement Device:
DWR WDID: 3604685
USGS ID: 09046000 (BORDITCO) -Boreas Pass Ditch at Boreas Pass
Datum: 11,485 feet above sea level NGVD29
Ditch Outlet: 18 inch Parshall flume equipped with Stevens recorder and a Suitron
satellite linked monitoring system.
The measurement gage for Boreas Pass Ditch is located near the Continental Divide.
Conveyance Efficiency: Boreas Pass Ditch includes an open ditch that collects surface
runoff, structures to intercept creeks and springs, and a section of gated pipe. Along the
length of the Ditch there are three types of intakes:
• Intake 1: Diversion structure to divert water from an existing creek,
• Intake 2: Diversion structure to intercept springs fed by snow melt, and
• Intake 3: '/4 mile of pipe with inlet points along the length of the pipe.
After diversions are recorded at the measurement device, water is transported to North
Terryall Creek through 3/4 miles of pipe.
BoreasPassDitch.doc 4 of 8
