Title
SPDSS Task 5 - Key Structure, Boreas Pass Ditch
Description
The Boreas Pass Ditch has been identified as a key structure for the South Platte Decision Support System (SPDSS) consumptive use and surface water modeling efforts. The purpose of this Task 5 memorandum is to document physical, legal, and operational aspects of those key structures identified.

Annual Diversions for the 1950 to 2002 study period:
Average (1950-2002) = 99 acre-feet
Maximum (1957) = 475 acre-feet
Minimum (various years) = 0.0 acre-feet.
The preceding data is presented in water year due to the availability of data at the time
this report was prepared. If this data is used for future modeling efforts, it is
recommended that the data be analyzed in calendar year. Monthly diversions for Boreas
Pass Ditch are presented in Table 2.
WATER RIGHTS
Boreas Pass Ditch has a decreed direct flow water right for 16.0 cfs absolute from Indiana Creek.
There is no associated storage on the Western Slope. The Boreas Pass Ditch water right is
relatively senior on the Colorado River. Water diverted through Boreas Pass Ditch is processed
in the Englewood Water Treatment Plant for use within Englewood. Table 1 presents the details
of the associated direct flow right.
Table 1
Direct Flow Water Rights
Structure Appropriation Adjudication Administration Decreed

Name Source
Date
Date
No.
Rate Use
Boreas Pass Indiana 1/1/1910 10/26/1937 30184.21915 16.0 cfs Irrigation
Ditch Creek Absolute
Colorado Water Rights Tabularion
Compact and Other Legal Considerations: Per Case CA 1709, the City of Englewood shall
not ask for more than 15.5 cfs and any final decree will not exceed a transmountain
diversion of 1,100 acre-feet of water in any calendar year.
OPERATIONAL INFORMATION
Boreas Pass Ditch generally begins diverting in early-June, with diversions occasionally
continuing through mid-August. The peak discharge occurs in June or early July and the flow
tapers off to zero by September.
Boreas Pass Ditch does not interact with any other diversions. Water diverted through Boreas
Pass Ditch is transported down through the South Platte Drainage and ends up in Chatfield
Reservoir. From Chatfield Reservoir, water is either pumped up to McClellan Reservoir for
diversion through City Ditch or water is released down the South Platte for diversion at the South
Platte Union Avenue Intake. Both City Ditch and the South Platte Union Avenue Intake deliver
water to the Englewood Water Treatment Plant. Boreas Pass Ditch water is processed in the
Water Treatment Plant for use within Englewood.
BoreasPassDitch.doc 6 of 8
