will also be undertaken. A plan to approach river property owners and inform them of proper
bn~sh disposal techiuques will be created.
BCWI will also look to partner with the PACE program and the CU Enviromllental Center to
educate business owners and students on proper medical and personal waste disposal.
Sc. Water Quality Monitoring
Water quality monitoring at selected sites is the cornerstone of the collaborative effort between
KICP, USGS and BOWL The group discussed the need for all StreamTeams to monitor the
following: flow, pH, dissolved oxygen, temperature, phosphate, nitrate, and conductivity among
other constituents. The USGS has suggested the creation of a modified water quality index based
on these parameters. This was agreed to be a good idea for volunteers to better understand the
health of their section of the creek.
Some groups may want questions answered about specific contaminants of concern such as
metals and bacteria. In this case, monitoring equipment could be provided for these
contaminants. Monitoring for Lakes might also be incorporated into the StreamTeam plan.
Trainng for physical habitat assessments and macroinvertebrate sampling may occur.
Informational meetings discussing the Federal Clean Water Act, Colorado state water quality
standards and Colorado water law may be undertaken.
For those Stream Teams that are interested in participating in the Colorado Watershed Network's
River Watch program, including training and sigiung a commitment, they could use River Watch
equipment for their monitoring efforts.
Sd. Restoration
As addressed in Section 4c, many successful restoration efforts have been accomplished by
various entities and are ongoing throughout the watershed. BCWI plans to focus on restoration
efforts identified through this project and will collaborate with those entities (Wildland
Restoration Volunteers, Boulder County, etc.) that have had success in conducting those efforts.
Restoration activities are complex and involve time to conduct plamling and the training of
volunteers. BCWI staff has experience in worl~ing on restoration projects and was trained as a
Crew Leader by the Colorado Outdoor Training Institute. Working collaboratively with those
who have had experience in conducting restoration efforts is important to the overall success of
those projects.
Se. Invasive Suedes
BCWI plans to work with stakeholders to build a volunteer base that can address this problem.
BCWI plans to attend a EWM removal training session sponsored by WRV and/or Boulder
Mountain Parks and Open Space to learn the basics of planning, implementing and conducting a
Eurasian waternulfoil removal project.
When necessary and when needed, BCWI will collaborate with various entities in the removal of
noxious weeds such as Russian Olive, Leafy Spurge and Japanese Knot Weed.
11
